Isn't the Viper engine a V10???
They had to chop 2 cylinders off to make it fit the A3. Actually a fairly easy DIY job if you have a decent junior hacksaw...It was a joint venture by a specialist tuner, look it up on youtube..

The first thing i would look for is look under the bonnet and make sure someone had swapped the 1.6 for the 1.9tdi lump.what should we look out for?

Seriously, the 1.6 A3 is one of the most tedious cars you can get, just don't do it. Look at your options and either get an oil burner, or a 1.8T.
Granted, the A3 is not the most inspiring car with any engine in, but its a good solid reliable 'does what is says on the tin' kinda car.
Think about what you're buying the car - Why have you identified the 1.6 as the unit of choice?
If you have to buy the 1.6, then make sure the cambelt/tensioner has been recently changed, as the VAG 1.6 of this age needs it.
Also, check the suspension for knocks and bangs - it will be long in the tooth!
The buttons for the climate control (if it has it) are prone to wear on the pre-facelift 8l A3.
Why not the 1.8T or 1.9 TDI?

I presume, style, bang per buck and driving enjoyment aren't anything you are considering then?
Each to their own.But tbh, he's bang on here, i can't think of anything more boring, especially when there are a couple of other engines available that are so much better, if the OP really has to have that car.
The 1.6 is woeful, I had it in a lease car about 10 years ago.
Hi all
Thanks for replying, I now live in Dublin and tax and insurance is very expensive over here. The A3 is coming out at only €480
The A3 feels very solid compared to other cars in our budget and the selection of cars is no where near as varied as it is in the UK.
I wanted a 1.7 puma but its too small and the insurance is twice the price
Oh and the OH LOVES Audis

What about the tdi? I'd still pay double the insurance for the 1.8t. But im an idiot and I hemorrhage cash
the Tdi commands quite a premium over here, I would also happily pay double for the 1.8T but its for Mrs Wolfy and she does not want to pay more for the insuranceGassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
