Is there any way of telling if the pre-cats have been removed...without removing the manifold?

Yes!

Remove y-piece and look up

Or you might be able to stick some thing up the lambda hole to prod it

Looking at the temps will give you a good idea, the cats heat up as nice hot spots wink

Might be best to remove the manifolds anyway just in case the little cats have ended up on top of the big one smile

All in the way she purrs,

Feel round the area were the pre cats are due to be, when cold lol
Not many can be removed without a couple of dents made while chipping them out.

Otherwise remove the y piece

They'll have been cut and welded no doubt, so the weld would differ on one more end than the other.

They sound different too, under load at low revs. No good if you're not also in another car at the same time with 4 ears though.

+1 - Mine had one melted on top of main Cat, but not been there too long to damage main, and the other melted but not yet fallen out.

You've just got to remove to check, you may save yourself the cost of a new main cat if they have sat on it for too long??

If your engine "note"/exhaust has got "gruffer" - technical term - time to bite-the-bullet.

HTH??

Thanks for the responses. I haven't got any problems, as far as I know, but am interested if they have been removed or not. Might take them off to have a look anyway though...just to make sure that the cats are either still where they should be or have been totally removed.

I have just had mine taken out and the car sounds different, it has a more metalic sound. If you know others with a 400 and you listened to them (not at the same time!) you would tell if one had the pre cats out.

Agree with previous posts re it is worth checking they arent loose as one of mine was loose.
