Hi guys

I'm currently in the process of importing a car from within the EU, what information will i be asked for when I come to register it back here in the UK. Do i need the build-date or the date it was first registered in it's original counrty for example.

Are their any pit-falls to be avoided

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul
Although slightly different, I am rebuilding an Aston Martin barn find. After checking with Aston Martin I found that the car was originaly exported to Japan. Since no paperwork existed of how or when the car returned to the UK, or if it came back as spares or as a road worthy car it's down to you to find out all the information. Customs do not search for you.
Anyway most of this does not apply to you. Once I paid the VAT on the purchase price and the import tax all I need to do now is get it MOTed.

Not sure if this is any help.

Thanks guys.

The DVLA website was useful but only covered cars less than 10 years old, the one i'm bringing in is manufactured in 1968 and first registered in 1969.

Spoke to the DVLA direct who were very hellpful and after arranging for a V55/5 import application form to be sent out to me, confirmed that I will need to insure and MOT the car based on it's chassis number, and get a certificate from the customs & excise confirming that import duty (there won't be any as it's within the EU) has been settled, and the original Italian registration document. Once i've taken all this to the local DVLA office and paid the registration fee of £55 they will process the application and issue a new MOT certificate, Tax disk, and V5 along with a new age-related registration number. Due to the age of the car, no type approval certificates are needed.

Then free to go....

it may have to be "transported" to the local DVLA office for the inspection
DVLA's definition of transported is that no tyre may touch the road, as they will want to inspect the cars vin etc.
so transporter or trailer to DVLA, not a problem for some people i know.

May, but unlikely. I've never had any of my imported cars inspected before regsitration, neither has anyone I know.

They didn't used to do it - but a lot of guys over on the Mustang club forum have had to take cars to be personally inspected before registration ...

They do it all the time on new imports to check that they are in fact "new" from memory I think new was under 1000 miles.

On old secondhand not sure any inspection needed
