With the imminent demise of the N/A engine in favour of turbo’d two strokes and the like, I thought I’d share my dislike of the term ‘overboost’. Normally, this is a bad thing to happen no? So why the hell is it now a selling feature on every car, no matter how mundane the damn thing is?

I even had an older acquaintance regale me with the speed of his diesel Picasso when the overboost “facility” kicked in.

How does it even work? Stuff like the new Corsa VXR has overboost that gives you xx amount of torque over 5 seconds. Why not just have that torque always there? If the car can handle it when you are thrashing it, surely it won’t make a blind bit of difference if you’re pootling to the shops?

I would guess some part of the car can't take it always being available with a safe margin, a remap would probably achieve the same result but loses warranty.

I agree, its a load of crap.
Obviously a selling point, a manufacturer isn't going to overstress an engine for a short period of time, which is what "overboost" is. So there is no reason why the car can't make the same power all of the time.
It makes my new Astra/Civic/Focus sound fast though innit.

It's like the "sport" button. All the "sport" button does is turn off the economy fuel map needed for the EU economy test. By mapping the car in such a manner, it makes the car seem more sporty, while actually making it less sporty. A cheap trick really.

All 2 strokes have some form for forced induction into the cylinder and the worlds most powerful engine is a turbo charged 2 stoke with 114,000Bhp.

That is a mechanical overboost that actually seems to give you more power for as long as you want it. I'm more intrigued by the new electronic systems that let you have a certain amount more torque for a few seconds.

What happens for example, if you go out to overtake a long queue and the engine cuts the power when you need it because you exceeded your few seconds of extra power? Or if you are out on track and constantly using full throttle? Do you get overboost, and then the car says, actually, you've had enough power, and then cuts it? How does the system know?
