Back on the road - Hooray - but with a funny noise at idle

After about 6 months of being off the road with a leaky diff and a new kitchen to fit (not inside the car!), the missus finally gave me time off for good behaviour and I whipped everything back together.

The good news is the new diff input seal and re-balanced propshaft seems to have cured the leaky diff and there is much less vibration in the seat of the pants at motorway speeds.

However, on my journey to work, after restarting the car at a petrol station there was a funny noise at idle.

It sounds like air escaping from somewhere and curiously the noise goes away when I put my foot on the brakes. It sounds like its coming from behind the dashboard. Initial thoughts included:

Brake servo pipe
Some kind of relay buzzing

Has anyone else had anything of this nature?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Could be the vacum pipe for the brake servo, can't really thnk what else, can you hear it with out the engine running but the ignition turned on, if so then it is not the servo, if you only hear it withthe engine running it could be the pipe or the servo it self.

You can check the servo by truning the engine off and then pumpingthe brakes to release all of the vacum reserve, then start the car with your foot pressing on the brake peddle, the peddle should move down a little when it starts and the vacum inside the unit rebuilds, if not I suspect you have a pipe leak or sticky valves inside the servo.

Good point - it is only with the engine running so it's unlikely to be an electrical relay.

I will do some tracing of the servo pipework and have a look.
