Washing machine recommendations
Discussion
Hi All,
Sounds like our washing machine has knackered the bearing on the drum which in turn has ripped an internal hose (flooding the kitchen in the process).
A quick call with a local engineer has suggested that it wouldn't be economical to repair (it's a Zanussi that we've had for 5+ years and it was 2nd hand when we got it!).
Any recommendations on cost effective machines? We do a lot of washing due to have an 18 month old so ideally i'd like a machine with a large capacity that is cheap to run.
Money wise - Max £250-£300
Cheers,
Phill

two options.
Spend close to a grand on a miele and it should last >10years
Spend as little as possible and accept it'll only last a couple of years.
Mine went recently and i bought a refurbished Tricity bendix for £110. Job done.
£250 will get you in the Indesit/Hotpoint/Hoover camp and you'll just be wasting £100 as it won't last long at all.
Mine was a door switch that went on the indesit. That was £20, then it had taken out the motor speed controller which was £100. No brainer for a refurb machine, and it's quite satisfying chucking the old one in the skip at the tip.

Though I love Miele, I wouldn't get a Miele washing machine.
2 reasons:
1. My parents have one, and it's had more go wrong with it, and they've spent more on buying it and repairing it in 14 years than I have buying 3 new new ones at £400 - £500 a piece.
2. In 10 years time the washing machine you bought today will be inefficient given the way things are moving with technology & soaps.

Panasonic washing machines have a 5 or 6 year warranty and have been getting great reviews, I don't have one but would certainley think about them when I do need one.
Long warranty for a good reason, they do seem to have a reputation for issues regarding technical support, spare parts and aftersales service. As a newcomer to the white goods area, they are not yet one to consider, maybe a brand for the future, but not for the present.
IMO, go with Bosch.

Option 3, get a Zanussi for £300 and it is still going strong after 6 years (as far as I know-sold it a while back now!). Two young kids so plenty of washing too. All this buy the expensive name & it will last is bullsSpend close to a grand on a miele and it should last >10years

t just like "premium" brand cars.I was in the same boat recently.
We ended up spending a little bit more on an LG direct drive machine.
The key selling points for me were the 8kg capacity and the quietness of the DD motor. If the washing machine lives in your kitchen rather than a utility room, you'll really appreciate the difference.

Indesit Moon - cheap, looks ok, big drum and internal soap dispenser. Last time I checked they were £200 at Makro.
My dad swears by Miele, but as has already been said you're paying a huge premium in the initial purchase.

Wasn't there a thing on Watchdog about the moon going wrong and mouldy? My dad swears by Miele, but as has already been said you're paying a huge premium in the initial purchase.

I have a Hotpoint had it 6 years, one call out to replace a PCB when it was about 2 weeks old, never put a foot wrong since.

Interesting... ours is in the kitchen and it drives me up the wall when it's on it's spin cycleWe ended up spending a little bit more on an LG direct drive machine.

We were recently looking in Currys for one for the m-i-l.
They had a Bosch one that is in your price range, significantly reduced from previous price, that one seemed to me to be good value, straightforward to operate, and built OK, as far as you can tell in a showroom.
It was about 250ish iirc. Can't remember the model number, sorry.

Useful

Unfortunately I left all my notes with the outlaws.
Looked very much like this one
But that shows online at 299.97 and I'm sure the one in the Currys I visited had been discounted further. They had stuff all on display as they were busy integrating Currys and PC World into one store.
btw I lost my rag in the end, every m/c I turned up got a response as follows, too complicated, can't read the display, not high enough spin speed, not enough capacity, too much capacity, too expensive, too cheap,
finally found the perfect one..... do they do it in a different colour?

ISE washing machines- more like commercial washing machines and cost the same as Miele and looks like they could last even longer!
