The new speed cameras between junctions 25 and 28 on the M1 and now active! Allegedly the cameras will only be switched on when a variable speed limit is in force but I wouldn't chance it myself until it's been confirmed.

Yes, and they have to have the red ring around the speed limit illuminated too, otherwise it's advisory only, not compulsory, and not enforceable. TV news this morning said the cameras are only in operation if the red ring is showing. When no limit is shown, the cameras are not in operation either (you can't have cameras on a motorway ordinarily, hundreds would die each day, that's why they don't have them).

No need to, similar cameras have operated on the M25 and M42 for years. I can assure you they do not operate when no speed limit is showing on the signs - just don't ask me how I know wink

I noticed they're extending the variable limit on the SW corner of the M25 further back toward Leatherhead. It's a shame, as it seems to be that as soon as you leave the variable limit zone, traffic moves far more freely. These variable limits are grim.

PocketGPSWorld's camera database is very accurate when it comes to which gantries have cameras on them though, which is useful.

Part of the following thread seems to suggest that the M42 cameras can be used to enforce NSL without showing the limit

when Phill came through that section the other evening, he said they all had 70 lit up on them. He takes it steady through there anyway - not alot of choice tbh tho in a 1.7TD Cavalier lol

Apparantly the overhead signs are activated by sensors on the carriageway, and when they detect traffic slowing, they set off the speed signs. They do have to be manually turned off tho from what we've heard.
