Vosges / Route des Cretes
Discussion
Hello!
Me and a couple of bike/car friends are planning a 2 week driving/biking trip around Europe this September. We want to get to the Vosges on the first day, ready to do some of the Route des Cretes and good roads on the way down to Lake Annecy the next day. Thing is, I don't know where's a good place to stay to be near the good roads in the Vosges for the next morning.
Does anyone have any cheapish hotel suggestions with places to park? Also, if anyone wants to point me in some unmissable roads in the area then do throw me a URL to a Google Map!
Thanks,
Tim

I go to the Vosges skiing in the winter as it's only ~3 hours south for me.
It's good for a weekend, but not more.
Have a look around Gerardmer - lovely lake there, and roads leading to it.
Hotels aren't expensive in the town, not by the lake, and most have parking.
Annecy's a lovely town, too. Stopped there for a night in February.

We had a great stay in Hotel Restaurant Au Cheval Blanc in F-67510 Niedersteinbach in the North Vosges Natural Park before doing the Route des Cretes the next day.

It has a great restaurant and I found it reasonably priced. We stayed in their spacious new annex.
Their website is pretty hopeless http://www.hotel-cheval-blanc.fr/
I did all my route planning in viamichelin.com as it
(a) has the famous Michelin scenic roads,
(b) brings up the Red Guide (hotels, restaurants) on the map and
(c) also has the Green Guide (tourist points of interest).
Enjoy - it's one of my favourite trips.
