Afternoon,

After seeing a number of threads about respective rights when purchasing a used car i thought i'd have a quick look and see if there is any official guidance which may help.

I've found this which forms part of a 42 page entitled "Guidance for Second hand car dealers" issued by the Office of Fair trading to outline their obligations under SOGA and Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

It maybe better to read it in context the full article available from http://www.oft.gov.uk/news-and-updates/press/2010/... click on "new guidance' page linked above is 32/42 (or page 28).

For private sales this was the best 'official' guidance i could find from the CAB: http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_world/con...

Hopefully someone will find it useful in the disputes that seem to occur daily.

I have seen this before and found it very useful. Good that you posted this though as it may put some peoples minds at rest.

That aside i take your point, which i guess is why there is constant problems with it, vendors use the ambiguity to their advantage.
However i expect if you lodged a formal claim any 'reasonableness' would be weighted towards the purchaser.
