Hello all

Soon i will be coming into the possession of a 95 BMW 318. I know its a bit boring, but its also a £1. Seriously. Now the idea was for me and my mate to practice some car mechanics on this, as apparently its a bit sheddy, and then hopefully take it to Lydden and have ourselves a cheap, slow, track car that if we wreck it, well it was a pound so who cares?

BUT under new laws if a car is taxed it must be insured. I've tried admirals multi car policy (im with them on my clio) but this was quoted to me as an extra £95 for the clio (why i have no idea) and then nearly six hundred on the BMW! This with the value at £100, a 1000 mile limit and third party only!

The other only option is to SORN the car when not using it, take out week insurance, un-sorn it, tax it, once the insurance runs out re-sorn it, claim the tax back and then repeat next time. Which to be honest is a lot of hassle. And defeats the purpose of us wanting to just quickly see if any work we have done to it well.....works.

Any ideas from the PH massive? A lot of you guys and girls have second cars, track cars etc how do you do it? I've always wanted a car to muck about and get under the bonnet of but by the look of it fking insurance is once again in the way.

Oh and we cant tow it to the circuit, we would need a towing license for that as were both 23. So yeh, looks like due to stty legistlation, no more fun frown

A 1995 car should qualify for classic insurance with many companies, also you have another main car so that helps. Try Flux and ask them, you may be limited on the miles though.

Being limited on the miles is fine, it really is just for us to practice fixing stuff and general mechanics on. As well as occasional use if i dont fancy using my clio or its in for a service. Thanks I'll try Flux and some classic insurers.

You could try some classic car policies - I wouldn't have thought too much of a problem. You've got an everyday car which is where some come unstuck, ie the classic is their only car, so some companies won't cover it.

If you can't drive it on the road and can't tow it, the only other option is a suitable flat-bed/covered wagon - probably not what you had in mind though!

I agree about this new legislation it's a pain.....

Thanks Tonys (and cpt slow) I didnt think a 95 would be covered by classic policy but i'll give it a go.

I dont think we can afford a wagon! As much as my friend would probably enjoy driving that as much as he will the BMW, hes weird like that, enjoys trucks and tractors...

I've never found the multicar options to be good value when looking at "unusual" situations, such as classics or limited mileage on the second car. They're more designed around Mr, Mrs and teenage kid(s) cars all used daily.

Give Flux a call or some of the other specialists and just insure it separately.

Go fully comp, it may be cheaper, since the only people who go for Third Party are those who are bigger insurance risks. I'm not sure how that works, but it is apparently true.

Never understood that, whenever I insure a shed I always ask what the prices for the two different levels of cover are. If fully compy is cheaper I just go for that. With regards to the Classic insurance - it's worth a shot, but I recently tried insuring a 1991 XJ6 for pretty much identical purposes to yours (limited mileage, second car etc) and didn't get a single quote with any of the specialists cheaper than I could have got insuring it with 0 NCB on the standard comparison websites as a regular car, so that plan never got off the ground. If you're a young guy (I'm not really, 26...) don't be surprised to hear quotes in the thousands after hearing <21 and BMW....worth a shot though, obviously. If you do get a decent quote I'd be interested to hear who it was with.

I have 2 cars through the same broker but on seperate policys.

I was with A-Plan and had one car through markerstudy (skyline) and the other through Zurich (mondeo).

They 'mirrored' my NCB on both cars so in effect i had both cars with full NCB.

I am now through Keith Michaels and they offer the same mirror type policy, but i have now built up full NCB on 2 seperate policys.

Flux and a few other insurance brokers offer this too.

I'd take a guess at eBay.

I currently get a very good deal on my clio from admiral, so i dont want to change that if i can (im 23, i pay less then 600 a year with 4 years ncb) So i'll see what i can do with the classic insurers.

Nope not ebay, my mum worked for a certain drug company in Kent who have closed the site, her boss is Swedish and is moving back there and doesnt want to take the car, cant be arsed to sell it so asked my mum if i wanted it for a quid. Why a quid i dont know, i'm tempted just for shiggles to give her a cheque when i pick it up though.......just to see her face.

I tested this on Confused a few weeks ago on a car I was thinking of buying.

Fully comp £x
TPF&T £x + ~30%!
TPO £x + ~35%!

Was more than a little surprised.

Interestingly though, the number of insurers prepared to quote against the latter two options was somewhat smaller than for FC.

Cant you just insure it for the day you want to track it? I know there's companies who insure for just a day or week.

LordBenny, this was the original plans but under a new law if you have a taxed car unless it is SORN'd it must be insured. If they go through their database and it isnt insured but taxed you get a £100 fine, they can sieze the car and you get a date in court.

Of course we could just SORN it and then re tax it when we wish to use it, but this seems a lot of hassle if we just want to check of a sunday afternoon that any work we have done to it was succesful.

Sorry to bump an old thread but seriously how the hell do you guys manage this?

At 23 im too young for most classic policies and the car isnt old enough for most others. So im getting quotes of over £1500!!!!!

does anyone know of a broker who offer a weekend only or very limited mileage policy? At the moment its looking like il be selling this on straight away as i just cant afford to insure it. And they wonder why people drive without insurance......

You need to check out the SORN threads in SP&L
There's no requirement to untax when you SORN although if you phone up DVLA they might do it without asking
Go online and SORN but dont go as far as untaxing - keep your tax.
When you temporaily insure and if you have MOT you can drive it on the road as you have tax.
It's not illegal to drive on the road if you SORN & have tax MOT and insurance.
With the present DVLA system it automatically de-SORNs when you take out new tax or change keeper. There's no other manual method. Does it matter?
If you find otherwise let us know
