Easy job, not. Any advise on how to separate the trackrod end from the wheel hub arm would be very much appreciated. There isn't a lot of material to get a ball joint splitter in and I always worry about how much banging the arms can take (so that I can trust they don't fall apart when back on the road!).

If you intend to trash the ball joint you could try a little heat on the arm.

On a very solid floor loosen the nut (but leave on the end) lower the cars weight onto a single axle stand directly under the slackened nut and all the way down before giving the steering arm a sharp clout... Unless the job is solid and under pressure most of the impact is lost..

Cheers Guys,

Job done, well the taking apart bit anyway. Had an idea while asleep and did it this morning; hacksaw to the ball joint cutting close to the steering arm. Put a socket over the cutoff bit and sandwich in a vice, tighten a couple of turns and bang the stub flies out with minimal stress to the arm.

For future ref. We use a clamp type rather than percussion. You push it between the Ball Joint & Arm. The other half sits on top of the loosened nut. You them wind the clamp shut and it eventually gives with a bloody great BANG!! Makes me jump evertime.
Saves any damage caused by whacking the wedge type.

Agree, the wedge type I have was completely useless, there is not enough material on the steering arm to start with. And yes the bang does get you (well me in this case)!
