Ok decided I need one as cutting the grass with the electric was pissing me off something rotten with the cable getting on my nerves and not picking up damp grass.

So looking for advice on a sensible priced but decent petrol mover.

Grass is 300m2 ish with a funny shaped L shape with bit of a hill in one place from patio down onto level area.

Honda Izy. Not the cheapest but I recently got one to replace a cheapy and it's like a Rolls-Royce after a mini.

Another vote for Honda. Comes with a 7 year warranty. Mines done 2 years of serious mowing and is still like new.

Honda are very good, Hayter are too expensive (I had mine nicked by the travelling community).

I would say that anything with a Briggs and Stratton engine is going to be fine and reliable (dozens of makes use Briggs and Stratton).

I was in the same position about 2 weeks ago.

I would love a Honda but don't have that sort of money for a mower due to the house refurb going on at the moment so compromised with a Mountfield.

Buy direct from them via the website for free next day delivery (includes all the oil etc for the engine) and tick the box for a free extended 5 year warranty.

I would have preferred to buy from a local supplier but could only match price with a 2 year warranty.

Hope this helps

I have a few mowers (lots of lawns!) and the Mountfield I have is bullet proof. It's like one of the walk behinds featured on the link above, self propelled..... I use it for bits of lawn I can't get the ride on over.

Cheaper than a Honda and just as good. It's quiet and always starts first pull - even after a winter in a shed.

Buy a used Honda from eBay. Two or three years old.

A Honda HRB 425C would be ideal, 17" self propelled with a roller.

I bought a Hayter recently. Very disappointed at how quiet the engine is. It sounds like there are plenty more revs I can get out of it - it just sounds like it's ticking over when it's running.

Seems to cut the grass ok though

You need the Janspeed exhaust system and the whipple supercharger on it. Should do about 60. smile

Hayter are very civilised. I had a lovely key start one which those nice gentlemen from the travelling community stole from me.

I managed to bend the crankshaft of a Mountfield with a Briggs & Stratton engine (thwacked a slightly raised manhole cover in my lawn with the blade; it stopped dead). Replaced about 3 years ago with a Honda Izy, which has been impeccably reliable. In fact, better than reliable; it has improved with age. First cut this year, I pulled the cord after wheeling it out of the garage and it started first time, better than it did even when new, despite having been standing for 5 months. I've never needed to top up the oil even.

Have a mountfield, always starts first time, very happy with it. Just make sure you get a self propelled one, i'm a lazy barsteward.

Just buy a cheapo one. I did about 15 years ago, never changed the oil - topped it up once when it started to seize with mobil 1 - and it kept on chugging along. I only retired it last year after the cord snapped and a the exhaust was blowing. It always started on the second pull too. I have another B&Q cheapo one and it's superb, starts on the first pull even after the winter lay off, and will be subject to the same maintenance regime. The expensive stuff, in the case of mowers, is not sufficiently better IMO to justify the price differential.

Conversely my expensive Honda strimmer / weed cutter is a bugger to start and is brand new.

cheers for the suggestions, by looks of things it will be a mountfield as the Honda self propelled ones are a bit more than I want to pay.
