Power assisted steering packed up

The steering on my 2003 MCS (83k miles) has gone incredibly heavy. Feels as if the PAS isn't working. I've checked the tyres and they seem fine.

Anybody had this or know if its a common fault?

Unfortunately it's very common on Gen 1 mini's, not too expensive to fix I don't think :-s

Mine had a new one when it was 3 years old, it's 10 year old this year and is still fine on its 2nd pump

Looks like I need to get a BBA replacement for £200 which doesn't sound as bad as a BMW mini one at £500.

Update - paid £190 on ebay (inc VAT and P&P) for an exchange recon pump plus an hour's labour to have it fitted.
