Looking for something 07 reg+ but not quite sure what to get, have looked at Fiesta ST's but their performance aint great ..
Any suggestions?

I'd say look for something that's fun to drive rather than fast based on your age of car/cost criteria. For example, I have a Panda 100HP and it's hysterical to drive. Also look at Twingo if they have dropped into that price bracket.Any suggestions?

More money, older cars or less expectations? Any suggestions?

Does it have to be a hatch? What do you want to do with it?
Newest/fastest I can think of is a Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart. £6.5-7k should get you an 09 plate one with warranty.
1.5 Turbo, 7.x 0-60mph times and you can remap them to around 200hp. They also only weigh about 1060kg too.
Not sure it's what I'd actually buy though.

Thats what I'd go for, all be it slightly older than the OP asked for. Davey S2 said:
Do people really get put off buying a car even at this level if the annual road tax is a couple of hundred quid more?
I know it all adds up but the additional 200 sheets is a few good nights out.
I personally wouldn't be put off but it might make it an harder sale to the other half.I know it all adds up but the additional 200 sheets is a few good nights out.
Also finding the lump sum for some is difficult.
