I have recently been given a Vw Lupo 1.4 100hp Sport, of which it is a pretty nice little run around. However, whilst I am driving and changing from 4th to 5th at 60mph, the gearbox will grind. The other gears are very easy to use, and slot in nicely. I have heard the gearboxes on these cars aren't very strong, so I would like to get this sorted out. Especially as I have a 3 month warranty.

Before I take this car to the garrage, I would like to know what this problem could be.

It is either going to be a clutch release fault or a synchro fault. In the former case, it means the clutch needs to be bled, in the latter it means a gearbox rebuild.

I'd say the syncro for 5th has gone.

Does it grind at any other speed?

It does sound like the synchro though.

The gearbox on the 1.4 Lupo and Polo of that age is a very well known weak spot.

A google should throw up some answers.
