Commute from Henley to Old Street / Car Share Enquiry.
Discussion
Looks like I might have a new job in Old Street, central London. I live in Henley on Thames, South Oxfordshire. I hate trains with a passion and have always managed to drive to my jobs in the past (longest daily commute 65miles each way).
The question: Is this one possible?
I have a TDCi Focus for the job but its time of commute. AA Autoroute says 43 miles and 1 hr 19 mins. I plan to leave say 6.00am eta 7.30am and again leave 5.00pm.
Does anybody else do similar commute or am I mad.
Anybody want a car share??

Hello mate
I live in west London and often commute to old street.. Usually by motorbike though.
From henly to there you'll never make in an hour and a half in rush hour. Traffic is going to be crap nearly all the way in. Itll be a pretty stressful drive as well in a car.
Getting home leaving at 5 I'd say at least 2.5 hours with reasonable traffic?
Sorry !

Driving from Marlow -> Maidenhead used to take the best part of 45 minutes at rush hour.
If you drive to the M40 you will get stuck for ages at the High Wycombe roundabout and then going into London hit Hanger Lane.
Nasty stuff.
For commuting into the London from Berkshire the train is really the way to go unless you can travel outside the peak periods.
The line starts at Henley so you probably have a decent chance of getting a seat. I've only commuted from Marlow so don’t know how bad Henley trains are in the morning...

You could look at driving to High Wycombe and taking the train from there; it's the least crowded service into London, you should have no trouble getting a seat at that time of the morning, then look at getting a folding bike or using a Boris bike to get from Marylebone to Old Street.
If you're leaving work at 5pm however, any train out of London will be busy, but the Marylebone line less so than most.
Otherwise, I think you're looking at a motorbike or big scooter.

He won't get stuck at the High Wycombe roundabout if he leaves Henley at 6am. I used to pass through Henley as late as 7am and the traffic would still be light on the A404. Coming home the 404 can be a right 'mare unless you're on a bike.If you drive to the M40 you will get stuck for ages at the High Wycombe roundabout and then going into London hit Hanger Lane.

Agree that on balance the best bet is probably train into London, however unpleasant.

I live 5 miles from Henley and travel to Farringdon - so pretty much the same route

But, I use a motorbike for the trip.
Have you got parking at the other end? You also have congestion charging to consider.
Re. journey times, if you do M4 (which is quicker in the main), you're looking at an average journey time of 1hr 45mins with no hold ups (rare) - this can vary a hell of a lot though especially with things like the gas works on Cromwell Road/Piccadilly which you have to negotiate at the moment.
Not a fun commute by car I'm afraid.
I'm doing a similar commute from Cookham/Marlow to Regents Park (a slightly shorter distance than your proposed journey). If I leave at 6.30am, I get to work at 8am. If I leave at 7am, I arrive nearer 9am. M40 is fine but the A40 seems to be getting progressivly worse.
Henley to Old Street will be an additional 30 mins ish over my journey so its the best part of two hours in and not far off that on the way home. 4 hours a day stuck in the car. Apart from being very boring, its tiring.
Alternative obviously is to get the train but personally, I like my own space and to be able to go direct from a to b and not rely on the trains.

Dude,
Just bite the bullet and join me on the 709 train straight in to Paddington. Cracking service and you always get a seat. You'll be at Old Street before 8.30.
Trains back are fine as long as you get the 1706/1806, both are under 40 minutes back into H-o-T, with a change at Twyford.
I've doen the drive and it is not good. Contrary to what's been said above, typically getting in is not all that bad, but all the very best on the way home.
That said, if you are committed to taking the car, any chance of a lift?

Why not take the train to Kings Cross and change to the northern line?
I'm assuming you have to be there for 9am? The 7:09 goes direct to KXSP And takes around 1h 20m then change to the Northern Line on the Tube and go 2 stops ~5 minutes.
It seems easier than going from Henley direct to Old street - It is possible but takes close to 2h according to national rail and there are 3 interchanges!
Personally I would avoid the roads entirely. I just checked google maps and from Henley to Old street is quoted as 1h 5m but goes directly though C. London which means beastly traffic and Congestion Charging.
Go here http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/roadusers/congestionchar... to see if the area you work in is within the CC zone. If it is then its an extra £10? a day if it isnt then you'll still have to pay to use the most direct route by road. You can go via the north circular and come down City road to avoid the CCZ but the minimum journey time will be 1h 20m... - the same as on the train!
