And why do I need to be asked if I want one everytime I fill up? Are the people that need them that stupid they can't ask without being prompted?

Jonny's thought for the day....

a receipt which details the VAT paid.....needed if you're a business reclaiming VAT....or reclaiming mileage/fuel on expenses (the company will reclaim the VAT)....and lots of people forget to ask the cashier then hassle them again for it, so they learn to ask up front

Maybe it's just good customer service?

I know! And apparently, there are some people out there who are that stupid they don't even know what a VAT receipt is!

Or, indeed, how to spell prompted.

OP - you probably look like a company car driver (the people most likely to need VAT receipts) so they are just checking whether you need one or not.

I usually get asked when I fill up the Volvo, but rarely asked when filling up the Caterham. I don't find it that onerous to say "No" when they ask.

I even append 'thank you', after all they're just trying to save both of us from potential hassle.

Absolutely although sometimes I'm distracted while trying to hold the cream egg, haribo, and put my card back into my wallet hehe

Wowser!

Someone with good manners.

I also get asked if I want milk and sugar in my tea or coffee at so many places.

Those stupid people too stupid to say how they want their tea....

Most of these people are self-programmed machines. Ask them for a Latte and they will still ask if you want milk with it.

Sainsbury's are printed on the back of the card slip so no need to ask smile

I usually request a VAT receipt when giving the pump number. Regularly I am then asked if I would like a VAT receipt biggrin

I always say thank you, too. Costs nothing, doesn't take up much time, free exercise for your jaw muscles (since I don't chew gum). I drive a BMW 3 series so I always get asked.

I've always done this, but I guess it must be rare, because once the guy at the checkout asked me why I was being so polite! (Of course, I told him to fk off and mind his own goddamn business.)

try this one.

Hand over the payment card and say you want a VAT receipt. Wait for them to process the transaction and see how many hand one over, I bet is is only one in ten, the rest will say, "do you want a VAT receipt?"

why don't they just print the relevant info as standard?

They're more interested in boosting every sale possible, by at least 20, 30 pence, "would like a large coffee?" or, "if you buy this newspaper you get a a free donut" etc.
