Discussion

so i need a DVD player and enhanced sound quality for movies. i like simlple efficient stuff without flashy light or gimmicks.

any assitance would be appreciated.

Is your TV full HD / HD ready you may benefit from a bluray combo? The price of Blu Ray players has come down now and theres loads of choice for Bluray & 5.1 surround sound combos for £500 or less.
Blu ray players play DVDs as well as Blu Ray disks.
ETA - im unsure how the combo deals work but surely if it is just your DVD player which has packed up couldnt you get away with just replacing the DVD unit? If you are happy with the speakers you have already you can pick up a DVD / BluRay player for a lot less than £500 - you just need to make sure it has 5.1 surround sound outputs

TV is Full HD. LG 42LG790.
i would really like something uncomplicated. ie. i cannot deal with car radios without a volume knob. my hifi setup is mainly arcam which doesn't have any flashing lights or knobs/buttons it doesn't need.
something suitable for a 'grumpy old men' character...

A blu ray player is no more difficult to use than a DVD player.
Switch on
Put in Disk
Press Enter to play film
The difference is that Blu Rays offer higher sound and picture quality.
I use http://www.trustedreviews.com/ - their reviews are normaly very in depth and can be very helpful for choosing new technology

Looks nice
Remember to update the Firmware when it arrives. Its very simple.
I can't really post how you will do it because the menu on yours is probably slightly different to mine - plus your remote is slightly different. Its annoying as i have a Panasonic BRP aswell!
Basically - Just get the Blu ray player connected to the internet using your Wifi - if it promts you for a 'pass key' its normally printed on the back of your router / home hub. Then get to the 'setup menu' and i believe its in 'network' then 'firmware' then 'update'
It does the rest for you.
You can always resort to the user guide!
I check for updates probably twice a year, the updates normaly apply to internet features installed on the BRP (which i personally never use) such as Youtube which need flash and Java updates. Bugs can also be patched in Firmware Updates.
