Has anyone used a professional CV writing service ? I need to completely revamp my CV and I just cant seem to hit the nail on the head , so I am considering a professional re-write.
Services seem to range from £50 up to £400 - If I am going to spend towards the upper end of that scale I would like to get some recommendations as I can see lots of opportunity to be fleeced without getting any real value.

We do this service in our company, however the lower end £25!. My only advice would be unless you are a doctor, barrister or in some other highly skilled profession then don't pay more than £100. We manage an interview, a re-type, 4 copies on good quality paper, a CD with .doc and .pdf for our price. Good luck.
Just going through this myself, and the advice I was given was don't ever pay for one.
Seek advice either from those in the industry you want to move in to (so you know what strengths to bring out) or seek advice from colleagues and peers in your current industry (to find out what generic good points you've got).
"Prepared" CVs stand out like the proverbial dog's danglies, and the other thing to bear in mind is, come interview time, if they start asking you about the content of your CV, it helps an awful lot if you're actually the one who wrote it.

This is the conclusion I came to in the end as well. So I treated it as a job , planned it properly and spent 3 hours this afternoon writing it. It actually turned out pretty well. I've arranged for a colleague with a similar skill set to critique it tonight as well. Seek advice either from those in the industry you want to move in to (so you know what strengths to bring out) or seek advice from colleagues and peers in your current industry (to find out what generic good points you've got).

We can then point you in the right direction in making it a good CV and it would be free, except for the spelling police they need doughnuts as bribes.
I am going to come in here and say that getting your CV written professionally can make a massive difference in a number of circumstances.
I am told quite often: 'I think it's alright I had a few mates look over it and I've changed some bits around' in a lot of cases - they've actually made it considerably worse.

Thanks for all the feedback, I have managed to wangle a couple of free professional CV reviews so I'm just waiting to see what they come back with. My Colleague (professional consultant) was very thorough and its looking a lot sharper this morning.
This will be the first time I've actually gone looking for a job in 18 years, previously I have been headhunted or roles have come to be via my network. So having to have a decent CV has never been top of my list before !
