What's with the paper!?

Just came back from town with my mum and to my delight saw a a sleek sporty looking car In my rear view mirror. At first I thought it was a Ferrari 458 italia however on further glimpses it seemed to not be the case. Where I live is not by any stretch of the imagination a up market place to live, so seeing any sort of exotic car is as rare as the dodo. It turned off behind me into a co-op so being the nosy wker I am I turned my car round to get a better look (to the annoyance of my mum!) turned out to be the new mclaren MP4-12C. The car was covered in paper and was wondering why? You could still clearly see the shape of it so what other purpose is it for?

I have absouloutly know idea what the hell I've done! Excuse the multiple posts I'm on my iPhone! Surely it's not to prevent paint scratches!?
