oh God not another recommend me a bike thread

sorry before I start . .

My current MTB is, to say the least, 'Retro'! It must be at least 20 years old and although it's had a fair bit of use, it's pretty worn and could use a fair few of the components replacing.




I've done a bit of adding up and tricky sums and reckon it would cost 3-400 quid to replace all the bits with shiny new ones and that is without disc brakes.

SO

I've been looking for a new bike - hard tail, with hydraulic disc brakes and preferably air front suspension for max £650-ish - so this is where you good PH come in . . . .

(narrowed it down a somewhat as a LBS has the Cube range with 0% finance, whilst this is not THAT important, it's a good selling point!)

Also looked at Boardmans in Halfrauds and the Cannondale SL3 and SL4.

So I'm looking for some recommendations really . . . .

Buy British. You'll get them down to your price point and you are supporting two companies in the UK. (Manufacturer and shop).

I have the Stag which replaced my Carrera Fury and it is worlds apart. Geographically this is my local bike shop so I get greatr service from them, but if you ring haro they'll point you to your nearest.

A friend of mine, owns a bike shop in St. Albans, has said he can do me a 2011 Specialized Rockhopper SL for some money off (better not let on how much on here!) - what is the collectives thoughts on this particular steed?

Just done an almost identical thread - look up '£700 hardtail'! Anyways, I narrowed it down to three in the end: Cube Acid, Trek 4900 and Specialized Rockhopper - pick up the Rockhopper tomorrow, can't wait!

A LBS does the Cube range which I quite like (they also do 0% finance too which is a big+). What swayed it with the Rockhopper??

When I rode it, it just seemed to be nailed together better. There were a few things on the Cube I pointed out to the sales bod that I'd want looking at first, and I got a far, far better deal on the Spec. The guy who sold me the Spec reckoned that although the Cube had better gears and brakes, the Spec had a better frame and forks (he described the Cube's forks as 'gash').

I did like the Cube though, but just thought the Spec to be that little bit better. As always though, take them for a test ride first.

I never knew they were there, my LBS is Wildside and frankly it's a little high end for me in there, will have to go take a peak thanks

If you want to try a bike call them and they'll set one up for you to ride out with them.

It's how they switched me to me new bike and now I ride out once a week with them.

I think I've decided on the Specialized Rockhopper SL which due to a friend in the trade I can get for £560 (should be £700). I tried one at a LBS and it seemed well screwed together and OK (in the car park anyway!). Just have to find a reason to go to St. Albans !!

Thanks for all the help with the bike choice - it was delivered tonight (bike shop in St. Albans - work colleague in London this week - popped in on way back north).



Now just need to get out on it !!

i kept my bell on, has come in more than useful on man yoccassions. people seem to react better to a bell than an "excuse me" or an "on your left" no matter how polite you are...

Bell is nessary to get slower bikers out of your way on single track

(PS i would have gone Kona..
ive just built a lovely Kula frame with a 140mm fork for single track duties this summer
but at your price point my local shop in Bristol has Kona Cinder Cones reduced by a couple of hundred 0117 929 3500)
