I have come into some cash (not that much, but enough for this), and would like to spend it on a piece of furniture. My first thought has been a chair. I currently have these chairs:

Magis Chair One

I really like them but can definitely appreciate that they are not to everyones taste.

I am considering purchasing one or two Eames chairs (probably the RAR [rocker]), but they seem so overdone now it's slightly losing it's appeal! Does anyone have any other suggestions for chairs (approx £200-£400 to spend) that are either modern industrial style, or mid century classics?

PH probably isn't the place for this, but i thought i would try smile

SWMBO keeps going on about Barcelona Chairs but they're bloody expensive and I don't know how good the cheaper reproductions are.

Take a look at this website.
They take orders and then produce a limited run of very nice pieces of classic/modern furniture.

Some very nice pieces on here.

Let us know what you think.

You're right, some of the stuff is pretty good. What is the quality like? The demonstrating personnel really do a great job too...

Serious question and not meant as an insult/attack etc, but are these actually comfortable to sit in, or are they more for looking at? Do they have any padding?

I bought the "Stroller" desk from there. Very very good piece of furniture. Its bloody heavy as its solid oak. That particular pice of furniture came as a flat pack, but was easy to put together and had very good fixings. The only parts that had to be bolted together were the bars between the legs and then the top to that.

I would buy from there again. It does take a wee while to arrive, but for the price that you are getting the furniture for it is no big deal at all. Great site, can't recommend them enough. thumbup

These chairs are actually very comfortable and i use one as my desk chair. I guess they're not so good if you're the 'wrong' shape/size though. Everyone is really surprised when they try them as they feel so much better to sit on than you would think.

These really don't do anything for me. I would also never go for the cheap reproductions of anything. I could get cheap repro Eames chairs for £50, but it's not really the same!

DSR Eiffels are in budget and very comfortable - we've got a couple of Vitra made ones and they are great.

I am thinking of getting 2x DSRs as they are £100 less each than the DSWs. They aren't that exciting though.

My list so far looks like this:
- 1x Vitra Eames RAR (£370-£400)
- 2x Vitra Eames DSR (£170 each)
- 1x Magis Chair One (£235, this would be an additional to the one i have already)

Can anyone think of any other alternatives that are worth a look? My local design shop has put up the prices this year, so from being a lot cheaper than everywhere else they are now the same which is a shame frown Oddly the cheapest place i have found for the Eames chairs is Liberty in London!

up the budget a tad (or £500 smile ), get on Ebay and buy an Arne Jacobsen Swan chair and let it appreciate in value whilst having the pleasure of it's presence

I love the Eames rocker (particularly the kiddy sized one!) but know what you mean about seeing them every where. What about about some of the Ercol designs - John Lewis are doing a nice range of mid-century inspired furniture just now. Heals website has always got an inspiring range of chairs.

I don't think i'm really after something like the Swan Chair just yet. They are another classic design though that's for sure smile

In reality i've always wanted an Eames chair of some kind so will probably go with that. It's not exactly unique in any way (lots of cafes have them here), but it is classic, and i can keep hold of it for years without fear of it dating.

The DSRs would be the sensible choice as i could use them, but the RAR is appealing, even though it would be a look at and not really use chair. I can get 2 DSRs for less than one RAR though!

Further thought - Ghosts perhaps?

Lots of inspiration here http://www.ambientedirect.com/en/ Sadly, not as cheap as it used to be when the pound was stronger.

You see i could never find a way to fit that kind of design into my spaces!

Whilst we're on the topic of design/interiors, do any of you know of any decent forums/blogs?

I generally tend to only browse through Apartment Therapy and no where else.
