Peugeot 306 GTi 6 vs. 106 GTi
Discussion
Well, tonight the MX5 has gone to its new home so naturally I'm spending the evening browsing the classifieds.
I'm currently knocking around in a 306 DT I bought as a winter snotter (which I became strangely fond of) and quite like the idea of getting something cheap, cheerful, fun and semi-practical.
The late-90s Pug GTi cars seem to fit the bill, and both the 106 and 306 GTi fall well into the budget.
Aside from the obvious physical size differences, what would you buy and why?

Both good cars. The 306 the more speedy. If it was fun and Pug though, I think I'd be looking for one of these:I'm currently knocking around in a 306 DT I bought as a winter snotter (which I became strangely fond of) and quite like the idea of getting something cheap, cheerful, fun and semi-practical.

I would also highly recommend one of these too. Very nice comfy interior and with a close ratio box, LSD and a gem of motor a very good drive too.
Looking about £2k ish or thereabouts.
This should get me a good one of either - have seen some lovely unmolested 106 GTis for £1500-2000 and 306 GTi6s for £1200-£1800.
I'd give the BRM a miss, I can't stand the interior I'm afraid!
I'd also consider the Renault Clio 172, but aware that £2k doesn't go as far so I'd be looking towards the bottom end of the market for these. Still, have seen some good ones around about £2k.
I don't need the space of the 306, 90% of my driving it is just me in the car. I am however very impressed with the current 306 and like the idea of another 85bhp under the bonnet

There is no difference in straight line performance from 0-100mph between a 106/306 GTI. I raced several times stock for stock vs a 306 in my VTS at Crail and each run we were neck and neck. He was trying his guts out because we got into an internet war in the days leading up to the event when I claimed the VTS would keep up. I put my money where my mouth was and proved my point.
I have no idea what happens after 100mph as we trapped at 90mph(ish). I'd guess with extra outright power and 6 gears to work with the GTI might be faster at that point.

The 306 will be more comfortable, torquier and generally nice to cruise about in, but with that comes thirst and extra weight. Good though the handling is on the GTI-6, I'd rather be throwing a 106 about. The difference in weight is very obvious, and the 106 is an easier and more progressive car to throw about. Both will lift-off-oversteer if you want them to, but the 106 is much smoother and easier to catch than the all-or-nothing 306.
GTI-6 all day long or even better a 306 Rallye !
Driven a 106 GTI and I found a Saxo VTS (even though very similar) much nicer inside and a little less fragile feeling.... 106's seem to have very suspect gearboxes but then again so do the VTS's....
Clio 172 ? would leave both of these for dead.

What the hell is that on the front of that rover

106 GTI and Saxo VTS have the same gearbox and yes, unfortunately they are very suspect.Driven a 106 GTI and I found a Saxo VTS (even though very similar) much nicer inside and a little less fragile feeling.... 106's seem to have very suspect gearboxes but then again so do the VTS's....

Never mind leaving them for dead, a £2k Clio 172 would be as good as dead.
