Just randomly discovered the album Watershed from Opeth on iTunes and I am just at a total loss for words.

A mixture of celtic folk, jazz, blues, psychedelic, classical, progressive rock/metal, death metal, straight up shred and a bit of silliness in between. The musicianship is second to none.

Total, wonderful madness! If you're in any way a fan of good music go and at least have a listen on iTunes.

I wouldn't say the musicianship was second to none, they are all ok musicians but really nothing special. Decent compositional abilities, but it all sounds pretty samey in the end. They have been on a steady downhill slope since "Morningrise", which had some great riffs, they have failed to catch my ear since.

The first Opeth album I listened to was Still Life, OP you HAVE to listen to it, it's still my favourite. Their instrument skill may not be the most technical, but their song-writing abilities are top notch.

Ok I'll definitely get that album (as soon as I get back home in fact!). I disagree about them not being exceptional musicians though. Being a good musicians is alot more than just speed and frills.

I agree that compositionally they are excellent which is what made me notice them in the first place.

It's nice to discover new and great music. smile

Oh I'm not saying they're slack at their instruments in any way, the way they can play different genres is brilliant. I love the way they play (especially their acoustic sections), if you had someone like Ron Jarzombek on guitar it wouldn't feel quite right.

Ihsahn's post-Emperor stuff might be of interest, if it isn't already?

Thanks for the links, that first one is really excellent and the second, well I think "brutiful" is a very good way to put it! Watershed has become one of my favourite albums. Oh dear, I seem to be getting a taste for death metal. My patients aren't going to like this in the surgery at all hehe

yes Opeth are a great band, and Watershed is good, but I agree with those that say Still Life is the best. One has to get it, if not just for Mourners Lament. An absolute classic song

Hello Greg, I thought you'd pop up here smile

I listened to samples of still life and it seemed a bit hardcore so I got Blackwater Park which I really like. Maybe after getting into this stuff a bit more I'll go back and listen to Still Life again .

I remember in the early 90's some friends tried to get me into Machinehead and Pantera, it seemed incomprehensible at first but after a bit it became all time favourite stuff.

I'm always lurking mate wink, always waiting for threads about metal smile .

Do give Still Live another go, it really is a good en. Opeth have churned out so many albums i forget the names of them all now, but they do an acoustic (ish) one too iirc which i find quite nice. The song 'in my hour of need'?? is wonderful.

The song 'Harvest' off Blackwater Park is one of my favourite ever examples of 'acoustic metal' or whatever you might call it. Fantastic harmonies.

Yeah, I remembered you had a good taste in music after seeing a fair few of your posts about metal. I am still totally blown away with Watershed and getting heavily into Blackwater now as well. I will definately go back and get Still Life though.

In The Woods might be another bands worth investigating. Not listened to them much, as they've changed style a lot (bit like Ulver), but has a nice mix of Black Metal atmosphere and melody.

Watershed is a great album of balance in my opinion, shows both their Metal side and their slightly more jazzy side too. Some of the songs send shivers down my spine. Did you get the special edition version? They absolutely nail Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower, brilliant. Shame I'm not going to Sonisphere frown

I've never really got into Opeth, they have their moments but I find a lot of it boring. Admittedly I've not heard everything

Enslaved could be mentioned too, their last couple albums have been too 'Proggy' for me but their two previous were a nice mix of Viking Metal and the odd Floydism.

Again it's not really like Opeth, but could appeal to those not wanting straight forward Metal.
