Shifter cable size selection

I've got the Calofornia Motorsports Side Shifter and cable shifter on my car and it is not accurate when selecting gates: but that is about to change. It turns out that the cables that I have are suitable for smaller transaxles but not the ones that we use (cable diameter is currently .125" and sheath size is about .430 measured on the outside coils).
Cable Controls reports that the next size up is much more suited to the G50 transaxles and has an cable diameter of .160 and outer sheath diameter of .600. Make sure that you address this when selecting cable sizes.

It is 5/16-24x1.00. The cable is 0.270 versus teh 0.250 inch diameter that I currently have. A small difference in diameter but the load rating for pull and push is nearly doubled. The cables are still awaiting installation but they feel much more precise than the smaller diameter ones.

These cables have made a giant improvement in shifter feel. I hope to convince Roger to make a side shifter housing that is longer to allow the fore/aft gate cable to route around the left hand side of the motor. As it is now the cable for the fore/aft gate must follow a long path over the transaxle and to the right of the motor and results in cable drag.

Ken: I have the CMS side shifter on a G50 and I run the fore aft cable down the left hand side of the engine looking from the rear. The cable comes up just behind the last head bolt and then makes the right hand turn to line up with the fore aft/gate. The cable is a .250 dia and I measured the bend needed and it did not exceed the spec for cable. I will be intreested to hear if you feel that the larger .270 cable makes a difference. I am fairly happy with the feel of the system at this time. CMS side shifter, CMS shifter and Control corp cables. What I am not pleased with and will continue to complain about is the way the CMS attaches thier side to side arm onto the side shifter. As delivered to me this was done with a set screw with fine threads onto a round shaft. Wrong threads for alluminum and the shaft should be splined. I implore any of you new builders to require this modification from CMS before you pay the very real money for the CMS side shifter. Other than this issue I have had good service and I am happy with CMSs products. Lee

The larger cable has a larger minimum bend radius and as far as I can tell this requires that it go over the top of the transaxle. I plan to further investigate this.
California Motorsports has a revised arm that attaches to the side shifter that has a much better design and now effectively clamps. Another thing you will want to do is to clamp the shaft in a vise or somehow rough up the surface to allow the arm something better to grip with.

Clive, they are in Santa Fe Springs, CA, website at; http://store.controlcables.com/servlet/StoreFrontI got my cables from them, although I stuck with 1/4-28 size for routing radius. My frustration with the CMS shifter was the same as Lee's, every time the trans axle got hot their would be differential expansion and the arm slip on the shaft. My solution was to drill and pin the arms to the shaft in the end.

I pinned the shift arm as well but the small cable was inadequate for the loads seen with a G50/52. Look at the cable controls website, there should be a chart that makes recommendations re load VS cable size. If you call them one of the owners will answer the phone and they are very knowledgeable.

The goal was to take advantage of the very stable platform provided by Ultima when they welded the mechanical shift linkage tower in the car. There are photos up on the USA website (Home of the Ultima Car Club) in the gallery section.
