Tire size and brand on an S !
Discussion
The insurance is paying for a new set of tires (1st change of tires on the car for me).
A few questions are going though my mind, should I get wider tires ? Rear tires spin in 2nd sometimes and I've taken it in the mountains... skids a little too
And my other question is... which type should I get, I read the Dunlop Sport,Goodyear F1 and Toyo T1R are the best for the Tuscan S.
The car is currently on the stock size 235x40x18 and 255x40x18. Forgot what tires I got on but they're f***ed anyway so it doesn't matter

Dave can you divulge more about 255/35 all round? As im soon to get a set of tyres and want to try the yokohama ad08 but the place i'm likely to get them from has only got the 255's and no 235's
I would have thought 255 fronts would increase tramlining?
Dry grip is all im interested in as in the rain i drive like an old lady either way in any car

Toyo R1-R's, good compromise between the 888 and T1-R, they really transform the car !
225/40 front, 255/35 rear.
255 front is silly, car was never designed for that.
S spec cars came with 255/35's all round so they were in fact designed for it. It's just that since then some folk have found that different sizes on the front work better for them.225/40 front, 255/35 rear.

From experience of running both 235/40 and 255/35 on the front of my S, I can't honestly tell the difference between the two. 225's though are borderline too narrow for 8.5J wheels (unless you like the stretched dub look?) and can make the rims more susceptible to damage from pot holes etc.
So unless you're running some weird track biased set-up or drive on very smooth roads all the time, my recommendation is to stick with the sizes advised by the TVR specialists as they're the ones who know the most about it.

These TVR specialists almost all agree that the S was not designed to have 255 front; it's just that Wheeler loved the wide tyres. From experience of running both 235/40 and 255/35 on the front of my S, I can't honestly tell the difference between the two. 225's though are borderline too narrow for 8.5J wheels (unless you like the stretched dub look?) and can make the rims more susceptible to damage from pot holes etc.

I think 225 front is an improvement, more stable.
The Toyo R1-R tyres I currently have are very square and the 225's suit the front rims nicely. The 255 on the rear look wider than my old Goodyear 255.
If you come from 255/35, then 225/40 is the correct size (only 0.2% difference). 235/40 is too big (1.5% bigger).
It's a bit of a pointless argument anyway as strictly speaking the Tuscan was not designed for 18" wheels, never mind tyre widths. The top wishbone geometery was altered with the introduction of the S to make it work better with the 18s.
As GT points out, different manufacturer's tyres actually have different tread widths for the same size anyway, as the size is based on max carcass width, so it's not as simple as saying the optimum is a 235/40. If the R1R has a very square profile then the 225/40 may measure the same as an F1 235/40 in terms of tread contact.
Is there ever such thing as a simple question on here??
