Looking to change cars next year and I'm fed up of settling for boring sensible everyday cars and buy what I've always wanted - a LandRover.

Choice and budget dictate that I'll have around £10k but may be able to go a few grand more if necessary.

So finally my dilemma, do I go for a late disco2 (2003/4) or an early 3 (2004-6)?

Reasoning is that a '2' should have all the niggily problems sorted at that age plus I'll have a large pool of good cars to look at. A few pounds more and I should be able to pick up an early '3' however, will it have issues that a new model always have? Is it worth the extra outlay to have a fresher model? Will I be looking at sheds and better off with a sorted '2'?

Opinions please...

I think you'd need to drive them to compare they are sooo different, ie D3 is modern 4x4 with all whistles and bells esp with auto and can be quite limo like if needed whereas D2 is more like a luxury version of a defender so still quite agricultural. Owned a D2 for a number of years and a RRS (s/c) plus uesed a D3 whilst the RRS was getting its built in foibles fixed. for the money I think 10k is way too much for a D2 so spend it on a D3

IMHO, if you try a 3, you won't touch a 2! I loved my D2 but only when I tried the next generation did I realise just how dated it was.

However, pre-06 D3s are meant to be pretty iffy from a build quality POV.

Not that D2s are great shakes.

Good question :fetchespopcorn: biggrin

Having owned both, I'd get a D3 every time.

As a D2 owner for the last few years i'd have the D3 if i had the money, the OH refers to my car as the tractor! the D3 is a much more refined vehicle, light years ahead of the D2 in everyway.

For a couple of grand less than £10k you should get a really nice late Disco (in the last year or so there were only marketed as a fairly basic model (called Premium I think)and Landmark which was pretty well specced. However, I don't think you'll find a very good D3 for £10 as this will get you into very early, high mileage and low spec territory.
