I'm going on holiday on Tuesday and need to be at the airport parking in Staines for 1030. I live just south of Bristol so it will be M5 then M4. I'm not sure how heavy the traffic will be at that time of day on the motorway when we pass through Bristol, Swindon, Reading then get closer to London.

It should be a 2 hour drive max but how much extra time should I allow for traffic?

I'd allow four-five hours but then I'd rather sit at the airport having a burger than sitting in traffic thinking I'm going to be late for my flight......

Yep, leave at 6, you just never know what could come your way, especially as you near London...

I'd allow 4 hours (if it's usually 2).

The traffic on the M4 gets terrible in the morning, but the comment about leaving earlier and relaxing at the airport's a good one imo.

As already said, my preferance would be to leave ultra early and have breakfast at the airport after a very easy drive in. Catching a plane is enough hassle...

I think I'd be tempted to leave at 4 or 5 and take (or buy on the way) plenty of reading matter for the airport.

Damn that's early!

Thanks for the advice chaps.

It's going to be a long day. Our flight isn't until 1435 and that's going to be 10 and a half hours then I have a 2 hour drive the other end.

It might be time to check out hotels in Staines for Monday night.

If your flights 14:35 why do you need to be there for 10:30?

If that was my flight time i'd be leaving at 9. Leaving 3 hrs to get to the car park. 30mins to transfer and I'd still be at check in 2hrs before the flight. Maybe a bit earlier to be extra cautious but leaving at 5 or 6 seems overkill to me.

I need to drop the car at the airport parking in Staines at 1030. That leaves an hour to transfer to the airport as check-in will open at 1135. I want to get checked in as soon as I can because the security is going to be a nightmare as Obama is landing in London that day.

Fair enough. Take a good book then and don't start on the beers or you won't be allowed on anyway wink

I'm all for not having any stress but equally airports are bloody tedious places to spend amy amount of time.

Hotel with free parking (to negate some of the cost) might be a good option.

This is what I don't like about flying the fking about before always makes it such a chew. I've beaten friends back from the alps driving all the way.

I live 15 minutes from my local airport, and I still make sure I arrive for my flights 3 hours early. Book yourself into a lounge so you don't have to sit with the riff-raff in the departure area!

I work in Staines and at the moment a fair few of our staff are seconded in from Cardiff and they commute every day, using them as an example if they had left at 7:30 last week they wouldn't have made the 10:30 deadline.

Leave very early, sit at the airport and enjoy your holiday.

Good shout and thank you.
