As the title implies really, we're having a room change and I like the idea of the telly on the chimney breast. Do some TV's instruction specifically advised against it?
Any advice welcomed.

Yes, all well and good as a place to put it, but you' ll crick your neck watchin it from your low slung sofa...

I hung mine at eye level when sat down, way better and easy viewing.

Thats my opinion...

you will cook the tv if you have the fire on and the tv will be too high for comfortable watching also you may have issues with it been outside its recommended viewing angle if you have to do it though have some sort of shelf under the tv to try blocking some of the heat

You will not cook the TV if you think about it's placement and design of the fire surround.

I have had a 43" Plasma above an open log fire for 2 years without issue.

I had the fireplace made to an overall height of 90cm so it doesn't crick my neck either!

Edit to add that the same plasma was with me in Hong Kong when room temparatures would often be above 30c. The temperature above my fireplacce with the fire roaring never exceeds 28c so those telling you it's bad are talking st.

hence i said about the shelf wink

you will cook it if there is nothing between the tv and fire (like a mantelpiece) to deflect the heat away from the tv

just had a look at the panasonic 50vt30b and it says
Operating Conditions
Temperature: 0 °C - 35 °C
Humidity: 20 % - 80 % RH (non-condensing)

Generally no harm comes from mounting an LCD/Plasma set above a fire, but in everycase
the manufacturer will state that it shouldn't be done in the manual.

So if you do stick it above the fireplace and then have a problem that the
manufacturer comes out to sort take it off the wall first....

The real issue is that the manufacurers can use it as grounds not to honour a subsequent
warranty claim, and given that most now offer a 5 Year warranty as standard now it's wise
to remove it from the location
