Hey,

just removed the steering-column an the steering-box.
Unfortunately, the box cracked... frown

Does anyone know from which car they took it? Seems as I need a replacement.

regards
chris

I think this is the biggest single reason that early beetle based granturas don't make it back to the road. That is probably the single most Rare and hard to mend bit on your car.

You need to Ring Steve Reid and talk to Him.

Ok, so I will try to call him.

How about a conversion to the so-called "rack-and-pinion"-Steering?

Rack and Pinion can be done and has been. by all accounts it isn't too dificult to do. I do know William waaldenburg AKA Cantus, The Long Kenyon has done one recently.

If you can use the search function on here I am sure that he posted a couple of pics.

Cantus posted some photos when I asked about it a few months ago. I have got all the bits to do convert it just need to weld it together.

I might have a spare box, the worm was definitely broken on mine but I can't remember what the box was like, I'll dig it out on the weekend and have a look.

Hi - just to be specific.... the type of Anglia that your steering box is taken from is Ford 101E - the L.H.D version of the 100E. As far as I know, a chap in London does all of the spare parts etc... I'll try and dig out his name and number.
Good Luck

I do have an original steeringcolum for Mk2 if you want.
Or, I can show you how to convert to Rack&pinion if you want.

Thank you for digging out!

Looks quite interesting as I didn´t manage to disassemble the steering so far. When it was in the car it seemed to work well (...while pushing the car^^) but I´ll have to see how it looks inside.

As far as I know, the only thing thats broken was the housing itself.

Note that the top lug is broken on the pictured casting (very common) will need welding, my thoughts are that rather than mounting these within the chassis/shell 'as is' it is important to find the 'natural' unstressed position even if the bulkhead needs tweaking and or the chassis mount bracket requires packing.

The Grantura Mk1,11 & 11a workshop manual has a comprehensive section on the box and it' build.

thanks, didn´t recognise on first sight.
Mine is broken very similar and the material doesn´t look as if the rest of the body would be stronger... might be a general problem of the casting of the time?!
