Just another heads up about TV tonight, seems to be a lot of good stuff on.

Nat Geo now, new documentry about the Tsar bomb, the biggest nuclear device ever exploded.

Hopefully might be quite interesting.

Cool, I read that in the final stages of production they retarded the bomb with layers of lead instead of fissile material as they were afraid of breaking windows in Moscow.

Is it called the title of this thread, just so I can keep an eye out as I missed it?

Cheers!

Yes it is called the thread title. Knowing NatGeo it will be repeated fairly regularly for the next few months.

Was interesting but didn't spend a huge amount of time on the actual Tsar bomb! A lot of it was to do with the American tests especially Brave Castle (I think?) which was the first H-Bomb test which bascially went wrong as they seriously underestimated the size of the blast.

The Russians could have made the Tsar bomb much bigger but the designer basically said that might not be a good thing if they had got their figures wrong like the Americans did. What I didn't realise was that making a bomb much bigger than the Tsar was fairly pointless as they seemed to suggest most of the explosive force would actually escape out of the atmosphere. Still very scary though.

I have just watched this, and like most programmes on the Discovery/Nat Geo channels, it was very US orientated - which, TBH, I am getting heartily sick of – Dogfights – US planes are best – Clash of Warriors – US generals are best – Battle 360 – US generals and equipment are the best – any US derived history program, even ancient history – US is the best…….. rinse and repeat.......

Their channel
Their money
Their choice

Most British military documentaries are rather Britcentric in their own way too.

I have heard Jeremy Isaacs admitting that if he made the World at War today he would have reduced the Brit content and upped the Russian content.

…and ultimately boring/repetitive and too ‘Pravda-like’ for those of us who enjoy proper history.
It’s like any US book on say, the history of ships – you will have one chapter about development and a quick few words about important battles spanning 2000 years, then the next 50 chapters about US ships from 1770 onwards. A lot of my US friends even get sick of this, and have to rely on non-US sources to get a better picture of anything non US.

LOL, Doesn’t surprise me in the least.
I recorded a programme about the Queen of Sheba, as I didn’t really know a lot about this and was interested to find out. By the end of the programme, I was still none the wiser about the great biblical queen, but I did know the life history and how great the US archaeologist who was searching for evidence of the Queen – it was more about HIS life story, with the Queen of Sheba an irritating side note!

ETA - Same with the programme in the thread title, 98% about how great the US is, and the "worlds biggest bomb", because it isn't American, is tagged on just before the end credits.....

I enjoyed it. The Americans might have been featured quite a bit but they came out of the documentary as more reckless than the Soviets.
