The SLK was in for another stamp in its book last week. While there, they said it needed

New Windscreen wipers at £36 each
New Washer jets at £140 the pair
New Rear brake pads (Not discs) £220 the set

All plus labour.

To me, that sounds a bit of a rip off... I'd expect to pay £15 for a pair of windscreen wipers and something like £20-£40 for a set of brake pads. I'm sure sticking a pin in the end of the washer jet and giving it a wiggle would sort that out.

I haven't set foot in a main dealers in years, do they all (aparantly) rob you like this?

I think it's fair to say that mean dealer prices are never going to be the cheapest. But then they do have huge overheads to cover.....

I was expecting some premium, but £72 for a pair of windscreen wipers and £220 for pads is taking the piss surely?

Those washer jets better had be heated for that money.

Not all dealers rip you off. Just most of them unfortunatley

Not all, my slk has been very modest in it servicing costs. The MB dealer was ever the cheapest for tyres much to my surprise. Possibly things have changed in the years since you went to a main dealer?

Well I can presume it was a Mercedes dealership? If so, yes its worth carrying a tub of Vaseline with you on arrival.

Wipers: Up to £10 (that's searching for flash ones)
Washer Jets: Can't see obviously, so might be a dealer only, but I doubt it.
Rear brake Pads: (Pagid) £20.50

Five mins on Eurocarparts...

Mercedes dealers definitely take the piss. I ran 4 in a row and finally fell out spectacularly with them last year, when they demanded I change the rear discs and pads as they were "dangerously low".

The pads were 35% worn, and the discs were 45% worn. I had to sign a waiver to allow me to drive the car away and took it to my local mechanic and asked him to check them. He said they weren't even worth mentioning and had over half their life left.

The final insult was returning the vehicle 5 weeks later (end of lease) and them sending a bill for brakes and pads for as they`d advised it and I hadn`t done it!!! 8 months later we are still rowing with them over it mad

Well my rear pads are 90% worn smile probably means they've got another 6 months left on them at the mileage I do.

I don't dispute they need changing but £220!

I know of someone who was charged £28 by an Audi main dealer just for replacing a brake light bulb. A nice chap in Little Harwood in Blackburn refused to even charge me for supplying a bulb and fitting it. A gave him 50p and in return he stopped the traffic on the main road for me to drive off his forecourt.

When my work's A4 goes in for a service I always make sure that the washer bottle is filled up with properly mixed screenwash as they charge something like £10 to fill it even if it's 99% full. Not that I'm paying but it just annoys me that someone is getting ripped off, I've even made them take it off the bill if I knew it was full before hand when they've tried to charge for it. frown I dread to think what MB might charge for screenwash...

This.

You want the big shiny showroom with free coffee, plasma TVs to watch (with playstation at the last dealer I worked at and they were building a cinema for the kids!), a girl who's only job is to say hello when you come in and lots of men in shiny suits who'll call you sir then expect to pay for it.

Ford tried to charge me over £1500 for brakes, a radiator and air con unit, on top of an annual service.

They have told you the work they think needs doing and quoted you a price.

Your choices are:
a) Have the work done and pay up
b) Try to negotiate a lower price to have the work done
c) Say thanks but no thanks and make your own alternative arrangements

I fail to see where you are being ripped off confused
