NSU 1000/ TT / TTS

Recently was mulling through the ideaof doing a new project and fancied the idea an NSU TTS replica. They are hard to find but the NSU 1000/ TT / TTS do pop up on sites like the german ebay.

I know you are talking 1960's metal but anyone know what they are like rust wise?

Rust wise, I'm guessing they're a lot like 1960s metal.

I passed my test in my own NSU 1000 CS in 1977, a great well engineered little car that was great fun to drive, I loved it. I remember a lot of the bodywork was double skinned but I don't remember a lot of rust proofing, however if you buy a German one they don't salt their winter roads like we do, so you may find a really nice one. I bought a handbook for one at an autojumble a few years ago and it was a really good read, inspiring a pride in sense of ownership which is missing in modern handbooks today.

I did the Monte Carlo Rally in a 'works' NSU 1000TT in 1966. It was very competitive against the 1000cc Imp and the 998 Mini Cooper, but not as good as a 970 or 1071 Cooper 'S'.
When set up it handled rather like a Porsche 911.
A great little car.

Gent who lived opposite us when I was a kid had an orange 1000TT, he used to take us to school in it sometimes, I thought it was the coolest car ever, even though it was an old banger by 1979. I can remember him drifting it around the local roundabout with us sliding around on the vinyl seats! He traded for a drop snoot Firenze if I can remember.

I'm in ! Although I think the TT/TTS versions are big money in Germany

Any one else see the similarity between the NSU and the modern day Audi A1

I ran a 1200SC in the late 70's. Great fun from memory, steering was superb and very acurate. gear shift was always a bit sloppy, but ok when you got used to it. On Wet roudabouts it was a hoot ! Oh,rust was the big killer by the way !!
