After a conversation at a beery BBQ over the weekend with a few fellow petrol heads one of the main topics that ended up as discussion was about the ultimate fast road car for Britain.

With the roads in the state that they are here and the inclement weather our shores are subject too, if the Queen let you close off a 100 mile strech of your favourite public roads to let your chosen motor stretch its legs, what car would you grab the keys to in order to conquer those 100miles in the quickest time possible?cool

- In the dry
- In the wet

Assume you will also have to live with it for the other 364 days of the year, assume that you have time to get to know the car, assume a mix of motorway, A road and B road

Quickest possible, knowing there was going to be nothing else on the road? Probably a suitably setup Radical or something similar.

What car would I take? My Caterham.

Why that choice? Because it's a car I know, so it's much easier for me to drive it quickly than jumping into another car I'm not used to. I'm not a good enough driver to jump into an unfamiliar car and go quickly immediately.

What type of roads?

And how livable?

Caterham or other equally light and basic car is certainly a contender. Not so good for high speed cruising and all year daily duties.

Rally reps with AWD.

Porsche 911 Turbo.

Actually that's a fair point. If I was expected to cover these hypothetical 100 miles without any time to familiarise myself with the car, I'd pick a fast Elise just because I understand the handling.

I'd say 911 Turbo, driven one like an idiot on a track and family member has one (not as high spec but still similar) and it's also comfy on the roads as well as being a brute.

I'd take it to mean a daily driver thats usable on all roads and in all weather conditions.

Cayenne or Supercharged Rangie on the basis that speed on a b road is largely dictated by how far up the road you can see.

+1 that.
There is a pot hole that would cover half of the depth of one of my wheels near my house. Have to swerve it. The nicest piece of 'road' in my local area is an ASDA car park. So smooth.

Fastest time possible? Easy - a road legal Radical, or maybe a Daeur 962.. wink.

Sure, in the wet a four wheel drive car might be easier, but that was never mentioned by the OP, he mentioned speed, and for pure speed even a madly tuned GTR or Evo wouldn't see which way a Radical went - it would be gone by the first corner.

I was going to be a smart arse and go for a stealth car until I noticed the bit about closed roads. I think if we're talking all weathers, with someone of my monumental lack of skill at the wheel and restricted to cars I can personally vouch for, then I'd go with one of these with a large turbo on:

Given 350+hp we're talking very nearly Atom or Superlight R500 sort of straightline pace combined with 4WD and better aerodynamics. I can imagine a 911 Turbo would give it a run for its money, but I've not yet had the pleasure. Ewen made a very good point above. If I had to be somewhere in a hurry the car I'd choose would be one I was familiar with.
