T3/T4 turbo for a 5.7 is it too small?
Discussion
Hi.
I'd like some advice on turbo's. For the fun of it and the challenge I'd like to have a go at building a home spun turbo kit for my LS1 powered 5.7 litre Camaro. To keep costs and fab work down I'd like to try a rear mount turbo setup (several kits in America that have this configuration).
But I'm struggling to find out what sort of single turbocharger would be suitable for this engine. I'm not looking for huge power, just a modest increase and looking to run ~5psi or may 6.
Do you think a T3/T4 turbo would work for this? I've seen quite a lot on eBay and for not to silly amounts either.
Thanks.

I've a T34 turbo on my Sierra which I think is the same thing. Not exactly sure how it would perform on a 5.7 V8, but they are good for up to 350bhp with the .48 exhaust housing. You can get up to 400bhp with different exhaust housings but at the expense of shifting the power even more up the rev range.
I believe the T3/T4 is a hybrid of the two turbo's.
I've seen kits like this in the US: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...
I know you are really good on your motors, would you be able to recommend where I might find a suitable turbo? Would diesel truck turbo's be an option do you think?

Im running a pair of t34's on my 5.7
Those t3/t4's on ebay a chinese clones, they are not garrett turbos.
You need to learn how to read compressor maps, looks difficult but its very easy - you can read my website about that.
I would guess something like a gt32 is required for a single low hp setup.
Theres a paxton supercharger on ebay right now - Would need to check its big enough for a 5.7
Your 3/4 pack on the 4l60 will be on borrowed time though.

TBH, I'd just buy a new turbocharger that you know will work.
There are a few brands that wont cost the earth in regular oil journal units. Trying to source a big single large enough on the second hand market will be difficult.
Unless you can pick up the likes of a GT35 or something second hand
If the turbo isnt capable of making around 600bhp, then you are wasting your time as it will be too small.

One of my customers used a Borg warner diesel turbo , it was cheap and should have made 600 hp but never got to run it properly , look them up I think it was from a man truck. I am using two GT35s on my 7,0 litre with a 1.06 exhaust housing , they were specced by turbo technics ,one turbo was going o be very big !!!
AET turbos, CR Turbos, Turbo Technics, Turbo Dynamics etc etc
The list of suppliers is very long.
Borg Warner do make a range of very good turbos, still oil journal at sensible prices.
Something like that may be the best option.
If opting for the US, Precision make a vast range again at very keen prices.
Realistically, best bet is to look on LS1Tech, as they have been there and done it.
Size wise whether up front or at the rear wont make a massive difference.
