Windy out today

I was on the M25 at lunchtime, on my bike. The strong sidewind was making for interesting times as I was doing about .85 leptons or so, and it's a tall bike with a topbox as well.

A little way ahead was a skip lorry with a pile of 5 empty skips on the back, like this only red:



Then all of a sudden, the top skip was blown off the top of the pile, up into the air and landed <<CLANG>>> in the middle of the carriageway.

Amazingly, the car behind the lorry wasn't too close and just about managed to stop before hitting it. The rest of the traffic took avoiding action into other lanes and the hard shoulder, with the skip ending up across lanes 1 and 2. A second's different timing, or slightly heavier traffic, and it would have been absolute carnage !

Any of the local BiB involved in clearing it up ?

The M25 you say..........probably didn't even get told about it!!! The local HATO would have trundled along from it's resting position to deal!!!

Why the feck weren't the chains holding the top skip (I'm guessing it was like the photo?)???

I'm amazed the wind was strong enough to get under it and lift it. They're not exactly light!

Did the driver stop?

They are bloody heavy 4 of us had to shuffle one today.

Yep, just like the photo. The driver did pull up about half a mile further on.

It is pretty surprising that the wind was able to catch it...

I think the chains are only hooked on to the bottom skip as a convenient way to stop them flailing around. They don't actually secure the skip. The weight of the thing should do that!

Please - I have moved one of those by myself - they aren't hugely heavy. Add drag and wind forces....

I was getting blown all over the shop on my bike tonight on the way home (a gust pushing you 5 feet sideways in a second on the motorway isn't fun - why do I always have a crosswind on the M1?), so was praying I wouldn't encounter caravans for that exact reason!

An empty skip is pretty light. Easily moveable by one person

The other day I did see a skip lorry with six or more sips inside each other


At the time I thought they didn't look safe as unlike the photo above they were of mixed sizes

An empty skip is pretty light. Easily moveable by one person
