Hi all, I moved to Delhi a month or so ago, and have now basically become vegetarian.

This is for a couple of reasons - the meat here is generally minging (Chicken, Lamb or Goat), or you can pay a bloody fortune for some beef, pork etc. So we've gone veggie.

Luckily the culture here is angled towards veggies anyway, so we've no issues with cooking (and in fact it's bloody tasty stuff).

But I was just wondering if there are any supplements we should be taking?

I should add that i'm working from home, so am going to the gym every day and doing lots of cardio and a fair bit of weights - I guess i'm not getting as much protein as before - is this an issue?

Please, no comments about being 'powerfully built', i'm asking a genuine question here as to if we should be doing something else to keep our bodies going properly...

Just make sure you get enough protein - pulses - their super good for you and packed with protein and fibre. Other than than just a normal mix of carbs and veg. I presume you're not giving up dairy products or fish?, so you should aim to get your protein from the fish and pulses.

Ah yes, of course. I'd forgotten that the pulses are high in protein. Also eating eggs and dairy is fine too.

We're ramping up the lentils and beans... biggrin

Make sure you get enough B12, either through fortified foods such as cereal, or take vitamins.

Mushrooms, too. Could also eat soya if you can get hold of it out there. Is there a supply of decent fish? I would not give up fish (tuna etc which you could buy in cans) as fish oils are good for us.

Not sure what you can get out there as meat alternatives? But things like Quorn have mycoprotein in which should sort out your body's need for protein. Fish and dairy too as suggested.

Ironically, according to the Metro it is Veggie week this week? They did an article on it and basically said how much healthier it is to be a veggie than someone who eats a lot of meat, which is quite interesting.

The amusing thing is, I don't know any slim, healthy, fit vegetarians (and I know quite a few vegetarians). Oh, apart from me, but I am not 100% vegetarian (I eat meat once or twice a week).

Quite.

I've observed that a number of veggies have problems with their weight due to eating lazily - pasta and cheese being the worst culprits.

All high in calories/fat - low in protein/vitamins.

My brother has been vegetarian for 20+ years is fit as a fiddle, damn near ripped and way stronger than he'd seem in clothes (ie. muscles hidden) or for his weight. So not impossible.

Never said "impossible". The issue is that the article says vegetarian = healthy. I just need one overweight, unhealthy veggie to prove the article wrong. wink

Better make sure you have sufficient quantity of bog roll (the extra soft stuff) on standby, ideally in the fridge too!!

Have you allocated private toilets in the appartment / house?
