Yeah, it's a theoretical what car thread
Discussion
So I'm talking with the good lady the other day, we discuss her plan to buy a yank tank when she finishes her degree and knowing what she likes, I know she's going to end up with a 80s Camaro or an El Camino.
She's determined to do the work on her own and this really will be "her" car and I've been given the green light (once I have the money) to buy any car I like, but my problem is always "what"
What ever I end up with has to be something a little different with a sense of occasion when I drive it. Not a lot with a 4 pot engine is going to give me that unless I buy a Mk2 Escort, which isn't going to happen on the budget I'd be working to.
So, I'm wondering that if you guys had similar taste to me (ie: BMW, American cars, pickups and vans, Porsche etc) what would you buy with a budget of £5k?
It has to be reasonably swift or torquey...top end not a huge issue. Has to keep me entertained, lovely exhaust note etc
What would you guys recommend?

Right on the money and enough sound and pace to keep you entertained.

Scope for it to become either a second car or if it's usable daily, then so be it!
As much as I love TVR's, I'm not sure I would have one as I'm not the RV8's biggest fan and it wouldn't be long before I start hankering after a Chevy V8 transplant
See I'm stuck in this whole Americana bias thing, my mind constantly draws toward 70's Camaros (ideally <73) Trans-am's and basically anything older and muscle car-esque (not so much Ford!!!) or American pickups
ETA: Not sure I would want another convertible TBH

You mentioned Porsche and 5k, that’s got to make a 944s2 a worthy contender.
Love the 944, but the only problem I can see is that I might get bored of the 4pot!Don't think you're gonna get much for £5k these days, no Dodge/Plymouth and possibly only an El Camino as a US import and that'll be over budget.
Modernish Mustang but over budget?

As I can attest and agree with your car likes.
But I'll give the others a chance first....

Was kinda counting on it

As for the S35 shape Mustang, I quite like them and did give them some thought a while back, but I'm afraid when it comes to muscle, I fall squarely in the Chevy corner! I would stretch to a dodge or Plymouth at the most, but I don't think I could put up with the abuse I would get from the missus if I bought a 'Stang

I've seen older Camaros going for around 5k and cheaper dependant on what work is needed, Corvette is too obvious for me.
Although if the American officenados fancy throwing me a curve-ball, go right ahead...as long as it's not too new (when it comes to cars...trucks I don't mind!)
I also keep having rude thoughts about Audis too and the 4.2 A8 Quattro would be in reach (see why I'm so muddled?)
Alfa Spider: No thanks!
BMW Z3: Doubt I would have another soft-top as much as I enjoyed it
Jaguar: I've just turned 30 not 50!

Maybe worth upping the budget a lttle and looking into bringing something over fromt he States. Not sure about Duty & shipping, but it's gotta be worth expanding yer choice.
