We have the most dangerous roads you know, it is infact a wonder I am still alive to copy this link for you as I drive on these roads on a regular basis sometime even just to have some automotive fun.

The A537 running from Macclesfield to Buxton in the Peak District has been named Britain's most dangerous stretch of road.

An extensive report by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) has named Britain's ten most dangerous - or 'persistently higher risk' - roads. It looked at the number of crashes between 2004 and 2006, then 2007 to 2009 and compared the statistics.

Every stretch in the top ten is a single carriageway, and it is drivers in the north-west of England that have to deal with the highest proportion of dangerous roads. Five of the top ten are in the north-west region.

The A537 has seen the number of crashes rise by 62 percent over the last three years, while the second placed road, the A5012 between Pikehall and Matlock, has seen a 62 percent jump.

The risk of crashing on a single carriageway is, according to the report, three times that of a motorway and six times of a dual carriageway. Single carriageways are said to be so much more dangerous because of their 'frequent blind corners and sweeping bends', making overtaking difficult.

Head-on collisions are most frequent, accounting for up to three quarters of crashes on some roads.

On average, 37 people are killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads every day; in the last decade, 30,000 have been killed and 300,000 seriously injured.

Over the last three years, however, the number of fatal crashes on Britain's A-roads has decreased by one fifth.

The report suggests that a number of simple, cost-effective measures could decrease the road fatality rate by hundreds. Resurfacing roads and improving road markings and signs are two such measures. The RSF claims that 300 lives have already been saved because these measures have been put in place on 15 roads already.

Britain's worst ten roads:

A537 Macclesfield - Buxton
A5012 Pikehall - Matlock
A621 Baslow - Totley
A625 Calver - Sheffield
A5004 Whaley Bridge - Buxton
A54 Congleton - Buxton
A530 Whitchurch - Nantwich
A285 Chichester - Petworth
A581 Rufford - Chorley
A675 Blackburn - Bolton

and I bet most of the casaulties are bikers, the 'Cat and Fiddle' is a magnet for them, yes its a stunning road with amazing views, but most of them ride like absolute loons on there and take stupid risks and end up coming off worse when they hit summat bigger then them.

I'll "Think Bike" when the lunatics in the biking fraternity remember that the rules of the road apply to them as well.

I would take it as a personal favour if you 'thought bike' wink generally anyway as I am a member of the biking fraternity. However I am about as far from a lunatic on my bike as you can get. Captain MakingSensibleYetSafeProgress me. wink

But I agree, there are some silly buggers about. Thing is, being a silly bugger on a bike tends to get you free membership to the Darwin Awards waiting list. hehe

List was to the end of 2009 so its as recent a set of statistics as your likely to see. Think the 6 we get is an improvement (or rather a sad indictment of the pillocks we get on our roads) on previous years.
