AA web site says you need the following for travelling abroad

A valid full driving licence (fair enough)

The original vehicle registration document
(won't a photocopy do)
Your motor insurance certificate
(won't a photcopy do)

Nope, Originals only or in the case of the V5 a letter giving permission for you to take the car abroad I believe is acceptable but I am willing to get shotdown in flames for that one.

If so that is a little worrying as not only are you in possesion of your pride and joy but if you get mugged they get the original paperwork as well as the car.

Yes but if involved in an incident which requires attendance at the police station you'll be damned glad you had the documents with you!

I think its a small €14ish (?) on the spot fine for not having your reg documents on you, but then something like a €150+ fine for failing to produce them at French Police Station within 5 days.......
