Yearly Nurburgring Trip report May 2011

Last weekend me and my mate did our yearly Ring trip, the journey there was good and with a steady 70mph motorway cruise we averaged 30.19 mpg over the entire weekend (including 6 laps of the ring)with no dramas with the car, one thing I did learn was to never fill up again at a Belgium motorway service station 1.61 euros per litre
We stayed at the "ringhaus" again as it's the closest to the track and cheap (although a bit basic)

As is usual with the ring it can end in tears for some people


Brilliant weekend, total fuel cost was £230 over 1100 miles and a 30.19mpg average
best lap time of 9:36 which I was more than happy with.

However at this moment I think my time with the car is coming to an end, I have had a brilliant 3.5 years with the car, and although no firm decision has yet been reached it is likely that it will soon be in the PH classifieds as a Honda S2000 is beckoning.

And as Han said, that is a quick time in any car - I wonder if an S has ever been round there any quicker...? I know mine certainly hasnt been round anywhere near that quickly!!

On 4 out of my 5 visits I've seen fresh evidence of someone over doing it (cars on back of trucks, barriers being repaired, etc). However I've never witnessed something as potentially wallet emptying as this...

Reckon that nice bonnet must be worth a second a lap, no big "air brake" in the middle

I basically run Gaz golds pro's with 425fr and 325 rr springs with the dampers set to max hard (20 clicks), unlike last year I left my tyre pressures at my normal 22psi all round. It was a very commited lap with only light traffic, although I set myself a rev limit of 5k as I still had to get home in it. The car was simply brilliant through Flugpatz, Fuchsrohre and Pglanzgarten to Galgenkopf was taken flat out with only a dab of the brakes on the first part of Galgenkopf. I had to ask my mate to double and treble check my watch which has a chronometer on it, as I say I was very commited throughout the lap and the car didn't exhibit any under/oversteer at all it was very neutral which helped as when the car was loosing grip it sort of did a four wheel slide which at least kept me facing the right way round power steering would have been nice as my arms certainly ached afterwards. If you have never done it then go for it as you will not regret it.

it did get a lot of stares, i came with track-masters so porsche/evo owners but all loved your car in the maincarpark-lovely looking clean example

I am going to the ring in August in my S2.

Got a couple of questions about your trip:

1. Did you get or see anyone getting noise tested? (do you think you would have passed?)
2. Did you have any round clearance problems anywhere (in particular Karrusel, and Pflanzgarten)

9.36 is a good time. My PB is 8.59 but that was on a motorbike (Triumph TT600) I am unsure what time me or the car are capable of but looking forward to finding out.

Hi Although there is a "strict" 95db noise limit I never saw anybody being noise tested, in fact if they did half the cars there would be banned.
No ground clearance problems at all, although if you come out of the karrusel too early / late then you may have contact.

Have a good safe trip and make sure you post a report with some pics when you get back.

Agree with Tony, watch out for the Karrusel, I've not grounded my S there but it looks possible! Also do not be tempted to cut any apexes tool tightly, the kerbs are steep and sharp and will do some damage

Only other words of advice from me are be very careful if chasing a time - the only occassions I've known people come off is when doing exactly that.
