407 2.2 HDi SW - any good?
Discussion
once had a 607 2.2 hdi and its service history had the most horrendous pile of receipts for things being replaced, was shocked that a late model low mileage car with full dealer history could have suffered so many failures.
It had lived a fairly easy life with ust one owner who was a retired chap and clearly never drove it hard.
It had suffered
gearbox failure
turbo failure
all sorts of electrical problems
injector problems
plus a load of other things
And to drive it was very poor performance the power band being very narrow and the engine noisy. It did have a rather nice interior though thats the only good thing I can remember about it.
So, in summary yet another crap diesel.

Aaaaaaannnnd to counter the last poster.......
We had four 407SW as taxis (now three due to a write off) and although they are the 2.0l models, have been bloody brilliant. The oldest has 225k on it and is still as fresh as a daisy. Yes, the depolution system needs a flush out and you 'should' replenish the fluid for it, but believe me, at £25 a litre, it's cheaper and more practical to refill the reservoir with plain old diesel. The display can fade and has done on the 225k one but is still legible. The other two have both got 160k + on them but you really wouldn't know. The upholstery is still fresh and looks as new when hoovered.
We also have a 2.2 C5 which has dome 130k and still fresh. The clutches can be a problem, but £300 for a flywheel from GSF is not the end of the world, plus there are 'conversions' available to single mass flywheel which I believe uses a 406 flywheel and clutch. As well as that we have a C8 with only 65k on it, so it's a bit young to form an opinion.
The 407SW body and interior wears extremely well, the rear wiper will leak it's oil and seize every 100k, and it about £80 in parts to fix yourself. Other than that, brakes and pads are nothing horrendous, oil and filter every 20k but do it earlier to keep the old girl happy, we do ours at 15k but they are worked hard. Had one starter motor go, and one turbo (warranty) in over half a million miles so far other than service items.
Oh, and cooling fan thermal switch failed on one some 10/12 months ago. Only becomes a problem in sustained stop start traffic and only then after a long time. It's a bit of a pain to get to apparently. Front end of car off.

Mixed reviews here.
I have owned a number of Pugs over the years and whilst they were not the most robust cars I'd driven, they were certainly very reliable and also very comfortable.
I've decided against the 407 SW I looked at b/c it had the issue with the dash display, the rear bumper has been repainted at some point and had a different granularity of metallic particles in the paint so does not match that well and there is evidence of a large repair to the rear drivers side (I am currently learning to do bodywork repairs at college part time and have a keen eye for these things)
Sure, I could improve these things post purchase but it shows signs of neglect and poor repair and there are plenty out there for sale.
