I'm looking to change my E36 318is for something with more space and pace.

An independent garage near me has a 2001 (Y) E39 530dSE auto.
It is a 2 owner car, has been serviced every 5000 miles and has 81k on the clock.
It is Topaz Blue with the yellow/cream leather sport interior.
No nav/tv, manual seats, no sunroof.
It also has the large 5 spoke "star" wheels rather than the sport M parallels.
The car drives very well, no rattles or squeaks or unusual noises and the 'box shifts very smoothly.
The PDC is not working properly, there is some rust on the bootlid and the cruise control didn't engage but all will be fixed before sale. They will also remove the swirl flaps if I want it done (assuming they are on the car at this age).
It comes with 10 months tax, 12 months MOT and 3 months no quibble warranty.
It is up at £5,500 - Does this sound like a fair price?

The convenience of doing a deal locally without the hassle of trying to sell my car first is very attractive but I don't know if the price to change is there or thereabouts.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated because at the moment I am thinking I will do the deal tomorrow.

It seems it could be way over-priced given the comments in the other E39 thread?

Ah that's a shame. What would you think is a more sensible price? I could always put a bid in as it does drive very nicely.

If its advertised at £5500 that's what the seller thinks its worth, I think £3000 would be more realistic, you may offend the seller with an offer that low.
Earlier this year I sold a beautiful 525ise 2002 for £3000 and I think I did VERY well.
I know the diesel is valued a bit higher, fuel price will factor in the price but 5500 is very crisp.
There are 1000's of e39 for sale, you will fine a minter for £3k.
The petrol 525 manual I had was great on fuel, 28mpg round town and 38mpg on the motorway, so not that bad at all.
Be aware that the petrol has no turbos to go wrong, cheaper to maintain, and get a manual gearbox, auto is nice when it works but the bills for an auto box would be approx £2000 for a recon box, when you are buying a car like this, although they are very good, to spend that kind of money on a repair would be almost the value of the car.

Just had a quick look on autotrader, there is over 1000 5 series bmw's for sale, you WILL GET A FANTASTIC car for £3000.

With the amount on sale there is no excuse to buy one with any problems......smile

Customer of mine just bought an 04 plate 525i auto E60 with in grey with full leather, sound upgrade idrive and bluetooth with 70k miles on it for £6k, makes that Y reg E39 sound very expensive.
The E39 530d was not that great mpg wise either, I used to get around 2-3mpg more than my 530i.

Yes I have realised that I'm not too far away from E60 territory so I have let the seller know I'm not interested at that price and he isn't interested in counter-offering.
I shall just move on to the next one!

Yes, and some highish miles on early E90s, albeit most without SatNav/iDrive, and fairly efficient petrol engines.

It's a 530d, which is worth noticeably more than your average £3k E39.

Sold a 2002/51 plate SE with flat weave cloth, 80k miles for £5k last year.
