When I had my 3000 Mk1, the world wanted the BJ8 mk2, probably still true ?
However, I prefer the side screen models without the windy-up windows and the pram style hood perched out-back (but I would say that wouldn't I)

I agree.

The rare 2 seater 3000 mk1 (BN7) combines the clean lines of the earlier 2 seater cars with the power of the 3000.

Healeys were a bit like E Types, for a while. From the BN2 they got worse culminating in the 100-6 which was probably the slowest Healey. From there on they got better, virtually every new variant was an improvement.
It depends on what is most important for you. If it's looks, very personal I know, then I'd go for a BN2 (not a 3000), if it's performance then there is no better choice than a BJ8 Mk3 phase 2. It's not just the engine etc that's improved but most importantly the rear suspension which transforms handling, traction is amazing. The Mk3 is a bit more of a cruiser, but, it can be changed into a primevil road rocket if that your preference.

Assuming we're leaving the 100S out, Mk3s are the most expensive/desirable to most people because of the increased power and comfort, but for me they were losing the sportscar credentials and becoming grand tourers by then.

I'd go for a 100, but each to his own!
