golf 1.4 burning oil

hi new to the site...few questions i have a mk5 1.4 16v vw golf which is burnin oil an smokin i,am pretty sure its not the head gaskett or stem seals,i av also noticed the breather pipe going into the air box is clogged up with yellow pasty substance,anybody any ideas please???

The breather being blocked is possibly causing the high oil consumption. You will need to clean it out.

Do you do a lot of short journeys? this could be the cause. If not, it could be the head gasket.

Whatever you do keep checking the oil level is ok.

That's from the crankcase breather which is bolted to the back of the engine block. Clean the pipe out and the plastic box it attatches to (it's held on by three allen bolts) They clog up a fair bit if the car has spent a lot of time doing short trips. The excess crankcase pressure will try and find other ways out such as the dipstick tube or past rings etc.
