Resurrection is now at hand. Kuro is Dead! long live Kuro!
Discussion
Well gents, we've unpacked our new Panasonic TX-P55VT30 3D plasma today, and all I can say is
that it's without doubt the best out of box picture i've ever seen on a TV.
This is our third demo VT30, the 42" went on display about 6 weeks ago and has steadily improved
in that time, the 50" look sublime OOB but again just kept getting better, we had it up against a
Sony KDL52HX903 in the Cinema dem-room and it was no contest.
The 55" seems at least as good with less than 3 hours on its clock, just how good will it get? Who knows.
The 65" is due next month, and I can't wait.
Sorry if I sound biased, but Panasonic are to be congratulated, as when Pioneer gave up on Kuro we lost
the last aspirational TV, and I feared TVs became appliances, bought for how they looked switched off,
not for how they performed.
Thank You and Goodnight....

Running the grainy as hell 'Iron Man 2' Blu-ray disc in the unadjusted THX mode confirms this as emphatic focus prevails and gremlins are subjectively laid to rest; Gandalf's reference test disc 'kingdom of Heaven' reaffirms the calibre of processing at hand as you pick out stupefying detail from the most murky sequences in medieval Jerusalem.
The GT30/VT30 series sets are massively improved with respect to
The "50hz bug" you only see it when watching Football as the the
Centre line goes through the field of view in general it's all but invisible
From any normal viewing distance. Also if you set the IFC circuit to the
Mid position it's virtually invisible.
My own 50VT20 has this issue which has got better with age and with careful
Setup is invisible 99% of the time.
Nobody makes a perfect TV but I honestly think a properly calibrated and
Setup VT30 is the best TV currently available.

The GT30 was picked on in a review on AVforums by (I believe) Phil Hinton whose reviews I trust. From what you're saying the VT30 isn't any better which is what concerns me: There was a guy came up on the Lumagen forums asking whether a Lumagen video processor could resolve the issue on his GT30. As the cheapest Lumagen is the Mini3D (which I have myself and it's great) costs around £1,300 that's a pretty expensive solution to get a TV working as it should. Note that even this great VP can't solve the 50Hz issue. I know they all seem to have issues (backlight pooling on LCDs for example) but it just seems an avoidable issue that Panasonic were aware of before this range launched.
I'll soldier on with my old 40" for another season I reckon...it's only TV at the end of the day I suppose and thankfully I have a calibrated projector for 'serious' viewing.

I've just ordered the new 59 inch Samsung.
I'll let you know how it compares!
Saw this in Costco the other day - looked very good indeed.I'll let you know how it compares!
Was is definitely the 59? It is just that I understood that no-one had any stock as yet, which is why it is not shown on stock anywhere... and mine's not here yet!
I know if I put it side to side with the 65 inch Pana I might like the Panasonic better when we were being really picky, but after Quidco, it worked out at less than £1200 delivered compared to £4000 for the Panasonic.

I do like Panasonic TVs but not sure I understood your post that it's without doubt the best out of box picture i've ever seen on a TV.

Yup, definately 59" - as I was a size or model I had not heard of. Very slim for a plasma (almost LED slim). Nice picture. IIRC it was about £1500 + VAT in Costco. My old TV is beginning to have issues and the 5 year warranty has expired, so was looking at what would be a viable alternative, and this Samsung was the best I saw that day.
Cheers for that, that's very encouraging. To confirm, I think the 59 inch thing is about the fact that the screen itself is measured in cm, and that is the nearest conversion under. I guess they did not want people returning them because their 60 inch TV is 59.8 inches.
There are also two 59 inch models, one at £1200 inc VAT as well as the one £500 more expensive. I think the more expensive one included wireless internet stuff for access.
Let's not confuse cheapness/perceived quality with actual/absolute quality.
The 'dung is ok following a short demo and like a Yundi car, seduces with that great sticker figure but in the same way that it would be disingenuous to compare said Yundi with something that didn't actually suck your soul away whilst dying at the wheel, it is not remotely in the same division as that with Kuro DNA.

Maybe by buying a Samsung he'll be left with more readies to spend on a nicer car instead of a 'Yundi', so as this is Pistonheads, that's OK in my book.

Nah, he just plugged it in with the wrong cables.
Touche! As much as I hate diverting the thread any more, the irony of those last three comments compels me to admit the truth:
In the conservatory, there is currently a huge 36" CRT on a wobbly stand, and I became a father 4 months ago, and I don't want my daughter squashed as soon as she is old enough to grab it.
As it happens, the main user will be her to watch Cebeebies, particularly 'Waybaloo' and 'In the Night Garden' which she enjoys very much. I've spend the rest of my money on toys.
The TV will be initially fed solely from 30m of co-ax cable and a 'magic eye' link to the bedroom Sky Plus box.
The secondary user will be myself, and would ideally like to use the fact it is a 3D TV, and I have an HD box with 3D on it in the room nextdoor. I've also got the Sky plus box upstairs which 'magic-eyes' to the TV.
What is the cheapest/best way of getting the Sky 3D on this TV? Cheers guys!
