...to RAW.

Bought myself, a fortnight ago, a "Brick-Replacement-Gadget" - a P7000. Nice bit of kit. Must RTFM, though.

(Have been carrying round a D2x for many years - even into town and plenty of times I don't need to be doing my back in!)

I swore I would try and get the camera to do the work as the software, I know, has been coming on leaps and bounds. Where I wouldn't trust the D2x to turn out something with the right WB or cope with high dynamic range or whatever, I thought it time to trust the Box Brownie rather than spend hours in Lightroom.

So I switched the camera on, set it to Fine + RAW. And I still find I want to play in Lightroom. silly with the damn RAWs

How do I go Cold Turkey and stop this nonsense?

You don't. RAW is (almost) always the best option if you want to make your photographs look their best. Do you think Ansel Adams would have been content to take the negative of Breaking Winter Storm down to his local Boots to get it processed and printed? Because that's what you're doing if you let the camera produce JPEGs and bypass the RAW data - you're handing control of your vision over to something/someone else and accepting their interpretation.

Shooting RAW is not an addiction (apart from photography itself being one), it's retaining control of your art.

Its a viewpoint. HCB wouldnt be seen dead processing raws.
AA thought of the negative as just the start.

If you need or want to work from the raw (I do, some dont) then carry on.

I absolutly hate coming across decent older images back when I didnt shoot raw, no real ability to change wb, to pick better sharpening, to use more advanced de-bayering processes etc.

Ah, but HC-B was a bit of a law unto himself. He may have been more interested in the 'moment' than in pre-visualising the final print, but I'll bet he was a stickler for getting the best out of the negative when the time came to print it. I have a suspicion that if he were alive today, he'd have his Leica compact set to save RAW. Maybe he would have done only minimal processing, but he'd appreciate being able to bring out the best in the image.

Beano, please yourself, it's your hobby smile

Whatever Hugo Fandango may or may not have done in 1462 had he had the same technology is not relevant to you!

This photography game as a whole is starting to fk over my life. I really struggle to get to sleep at night due to thinking very hard about fresh landscape compositions...

Thing is I really, really think that I should trust the little blighter on snaps. Otherwise I'll be carrying the kit around all the time again...

I'm a little confused by this. Surley if you want full control and ultimate quality, then shoot in RAW, if you're happy with the jpegs your camera produces and you don't want to edit them shoot in jpeg.

It's not really to do with "trusting" the camera to get it right asking a machine to do in a millisecond what a person may take 20 minutes to do is never going to produce the same result.

They both have their place, you just need to decide which is best for you!

So why not just set it to take jpeg only? Completely removes the temptation to fiddle with the raw that way.

+1

My thoughts now are based around getting a decent set of B&W portraits of the family (just to prove to swmbo that I *can* do as good a job as the studio she was wanting to use), and then to get out on an evening and get some good star trails done.
