30ish mpg in what use? Open road most Subarus will do that, around town they won't.

Might be lucky and find a Mazda 3 MPS somewhere for £4k. This would be my bet, although sub 7 second 30mpg cars are rare at any budget...

There are a few MINI Cooper S models in the classifieds around the 4.5k mark. Worth considering?

EDIT: Can't remember whether the early ones were turbos or supercharged!? They changed over on the update.

clio 182 does it without the turbo
volvo s40 t4
some sort of saaaaaaaab
some sort of vag with the 1.8t engine (tt? golf gti? octavia vrs?)
fabia vrs might be that quick (can't remember)
cooper s?

Rover 220 turbo or 620 ti, if you can find one in good enough nick. Probably a few Supras out there too.

ooooooo the rovers are a good call, a friend of mine had a 220 Turbo "tomcat" years ago
back then it was a decent enough car
