Insurers asking for "Relative Experience"
Discussion
Bit of an odd one...
I'm coming up 23, and Have got bored of diesel power, so have decided I want something a bit more "PH" as a daily drive.
I got offered a very cheap Classic Impreza wagon, a Type A 2.0T, on a 99 plate, so I called my insurance broker.
The reply I got was "no chance mate" despite me running pretty much the same power FWD for the last 3 years.
I queried this, and the reply was "too many single vehicle accidents, and you've never insured a 4wd with us before"
But the same insurance broker are ok to insure me upto 400bhp in a FWD car??!?!?!!! (either a Golf VRt or 20vt!!!)
I asked what a good "entry 4wd" would be, and I'm allowed a 225bhp S3 which is worth more than the Scooby and is more powerful! For RWD I'm allowed a 320is or similar.
I'm confused!!!!
Any more ideas on 200ish bhp 4wd/RWD fun machines for sub 3k that are insurance friendly?

Sounds like its time to try a different insurer.
But, in theory, I think it's quite a good idea. The company I insure the TVR with only insure under 30s if they have prior experience of RWD cars with similar performance. Given the other option for a car like that is probably 'we don't do under 30s' it's actually quite a good policy I rekcon.

You could try a specialist broker. Brokers (a good one) will know who will insure which driver - try the Owners club web site as well.
But either way, at 23, you will be paying a very heavy premium if you want something fast and capable, unless you go classic or niche.
I've had good experiences with Saffron and with Adrian Flux, but then I'm in my mid 30s/no claims in 10 years/0 points/etc.

It's a funny old game.
The insurer who I had my Focus policy with wouldn't touch anyone under 30 on an MX5. The next insurer gave me insurance on the MX5 for £750 fully comprehensive. They charged me a little more to transfer to my Volvo (group 14 in the old system) but couldn't get a quote for me on a Clio 172 because it had "Sport" in the name.
So they were quite happy to insure me on a 13 year old RWD sports car and a 180bhp turbo powered saloon but won't touch me on the Clio? I can only assume they've had bad experiences in the past, as other companies gave some very attractive prices on the clio - but I had paid for a year on the Mazda so I wasn't just going to tell them to stick the rest of the policy I'd paid for!

Why not humor them? Tell them you've stolen a few scoobies in your time so you know how to handle them
Just try some other insurers, scoobies have a bad rep so I can see why they didn't want to insure you.
It's not even a WRX!!! It's a Type-A Wagon

Will try some Jap brokers.
Ive had my scooby for a month and i had similar issues with getting insurance. Luckily ive been with my current broker for 6 years so they know my history. I did try other companies but they all wanted written proof of previous suitable power experience. They are basically telling u that they dont want your business. Im 30 with full no claims, my previous experience was an e36 compact with m3 running gear.
Go to one of the owners clubs and get involved, but you might struggle as my broker wont insure anyone under 25 on a "fast" car.

Impreza = nutmobile.
Simple.
I was thinking this the other day as I watched yet another Scooby go bellowing past, tattooed, shaven headed bloke at the wheel. If I was an insurance underwriter there is no way on this earth that I would be insuring one of those without some pretty serious conditions being met. Utter dick-head-mobiles (with apologies to sensible Scoob drivers - it's just I've never ever seen one).Simple.
Regarding "experience" - most bike insurers that I've come across now ask what cc of bike you have been riding previously.
Cos your 23 and it's an impreza. Probably find with that insurer it will 25 and over only. Alot of insurers will apply terms for higher grouping vehicles. They may even ask if you have experience with performance vehicles before. Risk assessment basically. Just try someone else. There will be a few companies that will.
