Canon IXUS 500 camera - problems!

I have an old Canon IXUS 500 camera which I use for diving and quick holiday snaps - when I went to use it recently the camera seemed to take the photo ok, but the picture on the LED screen came out extremely distorted.

I had hoped that the LED screen was at fault, but when I went to download the photos, the downloaded photos were also distorted.

Is there a common fault that might cause this - I'm reluctant to pay someone £50 or whatever to look into the camera only to conclude it is unrepairable at a reasonable cost. We've now bought a new Canon Ixus 200 HS to use, but if possible I'd like to retain the IXUS 500 as this fits into my waterproof housing (a waterproof housing for the 200HS is £180 or so!).
